I`m going to be starting training for my class A next week. I`m deciding if I want to do reginal or OTR. I`m leaning towards reginal so I`ll be home more often for the family. I`m looking for some input on reginal in general and if anyone can recomend any decent companys to drive for. Theschool deals with Werner and Gordon alot but I know there are hundreds of companies.

Re: any reginal truck drivers here?

Thanks for the link. Lucky for me I`m not ging through their training school. It`s a private school. The way they talk up Werner it`s starting to make me wonder about the school too. The admin guy has already BS`d me on a couple things. I definatly think that Werner is not the company I`m going to go with. Too bad though cuz the way they talked about them I thought they would be the best place to go.

If they are like most schools they get a kickback from the company for sending them new driver trainees.
The one I instructed at for a couple classes got checks from Hunt, Schnieder and Swift every month. But there were other companies that came looking for drivers too!
These companies are what I called foot in the door jobs. Tough it out through their training then put in 6 months on your own then start job hunting for a better job!

Re: any reginal truck drivers here?

Well the admin guy says they don`t get paid from any of the companies but with them pushing werner so much it`s hard to believe. He`s been jerking mearouns from day one. The class orientation is tomorrow night and the classes start monday but I might not be able to start now because he didn`t tell me everything I needed. I`m getting very frustrated with this guy and I`m about ready to tell him where to stick his school. If I wasn`t getting a grant that covers most of it I would have by now. I might look into another school real quick.

There might be some smaller carriers from your state. I'm not familiar with that.
All the large National carriers have regional drivers but you only get a regional job with experience which means OTR for maybe up to 2 years before some will concider you for regional work! Some may be shorter time and some may base it off of miles driven and safety record.
Start contacting companies and ask lots of questions. Knowledge is a great thing!
Good Luck!:)

Yeah I figured I`d have to do OTR for a bit and I`ve talked to my wife about it. After reading the strories about werner in the link you posted I`m a little worried about getting on with them. I had planned to stat making the rounds with some local companies once I actually started to see if I can get something set up for when I pass the school. My buddy might be able to get me on with the ready mix company he works for so that would work out great cuz it`s local.

Too bad this didn't come up sooner so you would have had time to see if they would have let you use one of their trucks to get your license with!
I have seen small companies that run straight trucks that have allowed a potential hiree (with permit) to use their trucks to paractice and get their driving test to get their CDL license to drive for them!

Yeah I looked into a couple that actually paid for the training too but you have to stay with them for a year or so and they only paid like $.29 a mile which isn`t much with the 3000-3500 mile week they were talking about. I probably won`t do much better than that anyway for a while, lol. At least the school has the trucks to use and I`ll have tanker, doubles and haz mat endorsments. I got a grant that covered most of it o my out of pocket isn`t too bad of a investment. My FIL`s brother drove a car hauler for years out of southern CA and was making over 100K a year but he drove for like 25-30 yrs or something like that. He has a nice big house in LA somewhere. He retired from trucking and is now in real estate investments. I know it`s all about getting on with the right company too. Being good at the job helps alot as well. The best I ever did wrenching on bikes was $37k and we were doing ok with that so if I can get back to that or better it`s worth the money and effort to provide better for the family.
