when you turn on the lights with the key OFF, the gas gauge goes to E and the temp gauge goes beyond 250, but when you turn the key ON everything goes back to normal. this is a tach dash, is this normal?

Well when you turn off the key, the gas gauge should fall (sometimes it doesn't go all the way down though) and your temp gauge shouldn't move at all when the lights are on, regardless of the key position. It sounds like you have a short, I remember something like this happening to me when I installed a temp gauge, on mine but I don't remember how I fixed it. You should check your connections, especially ones hooked up to the lighting circuit.

First guess is you have a poor ground connection at the cluster.
