I need to get insurance for my '70 again this year. Through our normal agent it was an absurd amount so I only kept it on for three months then dropped it when winter came. The only thing they offered special was an antique type insurance which she said only would allow me to drive in parades.

Any experience with Hagerty.com insurance or others like them? Their rates for 30-40k value are very resonable by comparison.

Thanks,
Don

Another happy Hagerty client. The only claim I have had is for towing after a break down last year. Even though they could not find an affiliated tow company in my area, they agreed to pay the local tow company I use. It was a nice feature/service.

I have hagarty- havn't had any claims, but have heard they are good to work with.

one thing to keep in mind- the online signup forms default to the lowest coverage levels (personal injury, property damage, etc) On my daily driver i have these up high 100/300/100 hagarty was like 10/100/10... I've left it alone all year since i didn't feel like paying again- but as soon as i renew, i'll up my coverages. Don't know what the extra $$ will be but don't think it will be too much.

Remember, its not just about covering loss of your vehicle, but think about what could happen if you accidentally caused a terrible accident.

Just something to keep in mind.

I've had Hagerty's since 2000. Had a major claim from them too when my father tapped my car in the back leaving a show. Unfortunately he was carried as a 2nd family member on my policy and since he was in his '71 El Camino SS, from the insurer's point of view, I might as well have hit myself. Anyway, you can take your cars to be fixed anywhere you want. We chose a good custom paint shop and Hagerty's adjuster deemed their prices a few hundred over what they considered reasonable, so we had to pay the difference. We argued the point and got them to meet us in the middle of the difference. So, when you read where they will let you take your car anywhere you want to get it repaired, just keep in mind they may not pay the full claim if it's much above what they consider normal. But honestly, I didn't have a great deal of leverage since car number 2 hit car number 1 on my policy. I went from a perfect driving record of 30 years, to 2 claims in one day. I am still surprised they didn't try and drop us or raise our premiums when renewal time came around. Both premiums stayed exactly the same and I've even added another car since then.

I did a lot of checking into the classic car insurance several months ago for a magazine article and found a lot of differences in the coverage.

Hagerty is good insurance. I had a policy for 5 years and one claim which they covered without question. BUT, since I was retireing soon I also needed insurance that wouldn't let me down in the middle of the Power Tour. They have a specific mileage limitation that will kick in just about in the middle of a cross country cruise that will leave you without insurance. When asked if one could get a policy with no mileage restrictions they said No! They were not interesting in working with me. So be careful if you plan to use the car for a long cruise or drive it weekly.

Grundy has all the perks as Hagerty but has no mileage restriction. They even pay for loss of vehicle on a cruise if it breaks down. It will cover hotels ect. It even covers personal injury just in case your foot is run over at a car show. The only stipulation with Grundy is that you have to have a daily driver for work ect.

I pity you guys who went with AAA. Numerous people I have interviewed with a claim all say the same. If the car is totaled or stolen they only pay what's called market or stated value which means they use used car guides to determine what your cars value is. If you don't believe me try to pin your agent down on what they will pay for a total loss. As an example they only valued a frame off 70SS 454 at $7500. Time after time I heard the same story.

Hagerty and Grundy will pay agreed value. In other words you agree before the policy is written on the total value and that's what you get in the case of a total loss or if it's stolen. Agreed value isn't even in AAA or any other daily drivers insurance companies vocabulary.

So be very carefull on what your purchasing. Do you want a policy that pays what you think your car is worth or do you want to fight the insurance company.

I just requested a quote from AAA for agreed value, and it seems they have it. I'm looking over the policy next week when they do their inspection of my car.

Be very carffull 1hot67. In all my research I could not find any examples of AAA setelling a claim on an agreed value basis. There was always a hassell and offers of a settelment below what the owner thought he had the car insured for. Try to nail down the agent on a pay off if the car is stolen or totaled. Good Luck!

Great information!

Do you know what the Hagerty mileage limit is? It is not my primary car and I will probably not be driving it more than 3000 miles per year.

Does Grundy cost a little more because of their no mileage limit?

Thanks again,
Don

be sure you tell hagerty or whomever you go with what kind of coverage you want. hagerty set me up with 25/50/25 insurance. i didn't bother checking it for a year or so and was shocked when i saw it. they basically give you whatever the minimum required amount is in your state if you don't bring it up. i pay about $180 a year on my chevelle, stated value $40k, 100/300/100. i had a claim last year, clipped another car, my fault, and they paid no problem, didn't drop me or anything. i highly recommend them.

I just checked with AAA. My quote clearly states "agreed value"
$181 for $11,000.00 value. $197 if I want to bump coverage up to 100/250/500.
No mileage limit. Hagerty Ins was $159 for minimum coverage

check it again to make sure the words "actual cash value" do not appear anywhere in your policy. If they do, you have stated amount not agreed value.

You have to be very careful here because major insurance companies like to let you think you have agreed value, when you actually don't.
