I understand theres nothing i can do about a two thousand dollar price tag on a pair of bucket seats for a older gm car but wow. Im heading to the junkyard tomorrow to search for any parts that will help for my build and i was wondering if the prices there would be the same as online? Ill be happy with any pre 1972 seats under $500 i dont even care if they have rippes or tears. Any cars i should specificly look for? Will older camaro, impalas, monte carlo or other gm/chevy bucket seats fit directly in the car or will i need to modify the brackets.

Im looking for seats that look like the first picture (pre 1972 chevelle) and not like the second one (1973 chevelle)

If you can get the frame and the rails from the junkyard you can do the upholstery yourself with a kit—and either way I would want to put new foam in if I were doing the junkyard method. I was gonna go that route but just used 4th gen camaro seats and they look great

What you want are Strato bucket seats used in GM A-body cars from 66-72. The different makes of Chevy - Buick - Olds - Pontiac used different style covers but I believe the guts are all the same. 66 seats dont have a seat back release so you'll do better if you can get the other years so you have a mechanism to start with, and IIRC the center release mechanism started in 69. I agree - Starting with junkyard seats you will wanna replace the foam as well as the covers.

I highly doubt you are going to find anything older than say 90s in a junkyard. Most junkyards dont have inventory that is older than that. Certainly nothing from the 60s or 70s. You can make a lot of different seats work but then they wont match the theme of your car unless you plan on making major changes to your car. Keep aneye out for any 69-72 A body seats in your area (craigslist, swapmeets, facebook). That means Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Cutlass,442,Lemans,GTO,Skylark. They are all the same with only the covers being different. As far as that goes many 69-72 B body seats are the same with the exception of the tracks which you can just bolt A body tracks to the B body frames. B bodys are Impala,Bonneville,Riviera, etc, etc. Just know what you are looking for. Many people advertise seats as Chevelle seats and although they may have been removed from a Chevelle they are not A body seats at all.
As far as the seats themselves if they are original they will most likely need a complete tear down then derust the frames and associated parts, very common to have broken support springs so those will need replaced, frames and springs painted, new seat buns/foam and new covers. Also many times the plastic outer pieces are scratched, gouged and dried and. chalky so they should be replaced.
You are going to want to seek out only seats within driving distance as shipping a set of bucket seats is in the $300.00 range.

keep a eye on craigslist everyday!. theres a rusty pair of frames on Phoenix craigslistnfor 100 bucks. I picked up a really nice condition although red cloth set last weekend for $125. sometimes they're not advertised as gm bucket seats. last weekends seat were advertised as bucket seats, taken out of a 57 chevy. ive found another set listed, bucket seats and there's a pic of a early 50s truck with the door open. guy only wanted $40 for the torn seats. Heck I advertised last weeks buckets to see if I can trade them for a honda 200x trike project. jim

Zero chance that you will find original Chevelle bucket seats in most local yards. Yes, there are specialty junk yards that I see on the Motortrend Channel and yes, they have the seats you are looking for but they also know their worth and you will have to pay shipping. And rebuild them.

If you need an interior, I suggest that you "imagineer" your way here to a solution. First, figure out where your floor support braces are in relation to your desired seat mount locations are - take accurate tape measurements and write them down on a note pad.

And then walk the yards. I stuck with late model GM seat considerations but other manufacturers will be fine. Consider a modern electric seat and take a battery with you to check the motors and switches. In the end, I pulled a 60-40 split bench seat with an arm rest and storage out of a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE for twenty bucks each. The upholstery was grandma "only driven to church on Sunday" perfect and I have been very happy with these seats in my 70 El Camino.

The following is a write up with pictures that I posted a few years ago over on our sister El Camino Central web site.

This probably isnt what you want to hear, but maybe you should think about a new pair of aftermarket seats.
Procar/Scat have several different models,a couple are somewhat close to what you are looking for;
The Pro-90 and the Classic models are nice looking seats and reasonably priced.
By the time you buy a pair of used seats and tracks, clean them up,install new foam and upholstery, there may not be that much difference in the price of brand new seats.
I have a pair of the Elite seats in my Monte and I love them.
Just something to think about.

Craigslist = yes. I look through my CL and state/region wide and find all kinds of car parts for restoration projects.

Two thousand dollars for a pair of seats? Where did that come from? I see 3-4 sets on Craigslist right now the most expensive being $575/pair.
There was a local guy around here that was selling complete rebuilt seats; frames blasted and powder coated, new springs, foam and upholstery in your choice of color and model year style for $1500.
I sold my core seats fir $400 and put the money towards brand new aftermarket seats that were right around $1000 delivered.

$1500 hundred all done really isn’t a bad price. Springs are $300, ACI foam is $290, quality seat covers $400 and misc figure another $50. Plus you still have to buy core seats for a min of $500. That is $1540 doing the work yourself and who knows how good of a job you will do.
