Just wanted to post the final results from my Lewis Racing Engines 540. I can’t say enough how great Mike was to work with through the whole deal and how much I appreciate his time on the phone and all the extra work him and Darlene are putting in to get it shipped up to me in Canada…I know all that paperwork can really be a pain.

This engine will be going into my ’69 chevelle that will basically be a street car with a few trips to the drag strip as well as possibly the road course. The combo is pretty similar to some of the recent ones he has done with a few exceptions.

Dart Block
Callies Magnum crank
Manley rods
AFR 335’s with nextek springs and titanium retainers
Victor Jr ported by Curtis Boggs
Prosystems 4150 with Dominator metering
T&D shaft rockers
Isky EZ-Roll solid roller lifters
Custom Comp cam on a billet core. 256/262, .724/.714 on a 114LSA

Because this will be primarily a street car and I’m running a TKO O/D trans I needed this thing to be happy at a relatively low RPM cruise (2200-2300RPM). As a result Mike spec'd out a little different cam than he normally does with the wide LSA. I thought that this combined with the smaller carb would limit me to at or slightly below 700HP. Well, once again Mike outdid himself.

I also included some shots of the exhaust ports he sent me...appears to be running nice and clean to say the least.

This will complete my rolling chassis that will then go to paint jail for a bit and hopefully running next spring.

Gary, great sounding motor with super #'s too, well over 700hp/600lbs trq, wow, will be a fun ride when you get into it and sounds/looks to be plenty street freindly.

As usuall,Mike Lewis comes through with a great pkg, that guys really knows what he is doing & builds great engines, wish i could afford it but not at this time for me.

Good luck and get back to us after you get that beast instaled and take a few test drive/passes,i bet you will be smiling from ear to ear after the 1st time you mash the throttle but you better be holding on very tight.(LOL!!!!)

Dang, you're killing me here! I'll blame it on the cubes and leave the HR vs Solid part out of the equation....

Nice combo, he did a similar custom cam for me, I LOVE it! And yes, you DO need to hang on. :D

great numbers....why on earth though you would use a Solid Roller on the street?
Because I wanted to.

It's not a daily driver but a weekend toy. I don't mind doing the required maintenance and actually rather enjoy it. In my mind for a car like this why would you limit the RPM and power capability of your engine by not using a solid roller?

Very impressive and incredibly comparible to my 540 numbers. Particularly since doing so with 10* less duration, 114 LSA (probably accounts for hitting the numbers at a couple hundred less RPM) and a 4150 . My Dyno pulls were with 267/273-714/714-112LSA Isky (now 730/714) and an 1100 Dominator.

10.6:1 compression could account for something. Are you using the same JE/SRP 18cc dome, as myself and others, running Lewis 540's? If so, how much mill work (deck or heads)?

During my build, I was repeatedly presented with a variety of performance/quality avenues to proceed, I consistently chose the high end (or at least most expensive), within the parameters of the build, no Bryant Billet Crank, Oliver Aluminum Rods, Etc... Compression was the one department that I didn't throw caution to the wind. A decision that I am very happy with, considering the Lion's share of my driving is on the street.

My previous 11:1 439 was on the ragged edge of pump gas friendly, especially with 5 months of triple digit temps and only 91 octane available. Trading compression for displacement was what justified the build in the first place.

You're guaranteed to some very happy motoring. My only advice is to run reasonably lite, multi-weight (compared to traditional performance standards) oil and be concious of excessive (needless) cold starts. I think that was my undoing with the lifter/lobe failure I experienced at 1 year and 5000 miles.

Mike just built me a 548 and I am going to address this very issue with an Accusump. The main purpose will be "pre-oiling". I figured it was a little added insurance. After a couple of oil changes, I was planning to use Royal Purple XPR 10/40 oil. The oil that is in there now is Delo 15/40.

I just have to finish a couple of things before the "maiden voyage"

Man Mike..you're just cranking them bad boys out like clockwork! Great job AGAIN!

That is an impressive combo with a relatively short duration cam and a wide LSA. That is definitely going to be a good cruiser and smooth. I like how the AFR's with a good intake still *hang in there* at the upper RPM's even with the smaller cam.

You're going to have a heck of a lot of fun!
