I have a manual '70 Chevelle SS396, original motor and crank, but, nothing else... Edelbrock 6045 heads, Comp cam 292h, air gap manifold, kb pistons, high end valve train, 9.5 to 1 comp, headers, 3 inch exhaust, Holley 750 dp etc....

Anyway, I have been tuning the carb and the Chevelle kept dieing on the top end, ie. past 5500 rpm, she would lay over... So, then, one time, I upped the jets again, and at 5700 rpm, she slowed down, like I let off the gas.. Then, it hit me, reminded me of my old vortech blown 5.0 mustang, when the electric fuel pump was acting up...

Anyway, I go look at the Edelbrock mechanical 110 gph fuel pump and their is a little bit of oil coming out of the peep hole.. So, I change it out to a 110 gph holley and low and behold, the Chevelle now wakes up past 5500 rpm... Lesson learned again.... If she is dying up top, it could be the fuel pump...

I started from the beginning on the jetting and ended up with a 5.5 power valve, 72 primary jets and 81 secondary jets... Also added an accel adjustable vacuum advance that I calibrated to the following timing.. 19 base, 37 total mechanical, 52 total with Vacuum advance... I am finally happy withe tune...

Now its time to tune the Nitrous... It is currently jetted for a 150 hp shot... but, this mechanical fuel pump has me a little scared... These pumps are only rated to 110 gph and 600 horse... I am wondering with a 150 hp shot, will I be past the the fuel capacity... I have the bigger fuel lines... In the past, I blew a piston and cracked a block with a Vortech blower on a '94 5.0 mustang cobra. I had plenty of pump, but, my lines were stock and too small and I ran out of volume.. I kept increasing the injector pulses, but, the volume killed me...

With a Tremec TKO 600 and the 12 bolt rear, eaton posi, moser axles, the drive train can handle it, but, I am wonder if this 150 hp shot of Nitrous is too much for the mechanical 110 gph fuel pump... Maybe, I should go down to a 100 hp shot instead.... Any feedback on this would be appreciated... Thanks.

I would not spray on a mechanical fuel pump PERIOD.....Especially a 110...... Now maybe a 200gph with a regulator you can T off from but.....I would only do that on a mild mild motor....

Just my opinion..... You're asking for a melt down with a 150 shot.....Maybe go down to a 100hp and pull some of your 37* back out.....

Thanks... I cannot afford a meltdown... I have too much into this... Of course, I will pull 2 deg of initial for every 50 hp... I have a wet plate system installed, with a separate solenoids for Nitrous and Fuel... So, you think 100 hp shot with the 110 gph mechanical holley is safe with this setup? When testing, what is the best way to avoid a meltdown if the system is not up to it? Test in a certain gear? only rev to so high? Any advice ?

I'm with Alan here... stay small and avoid a disaster.

If it were my car knowing what you told us I would even be inclined to put the 50 pills in it. Pull 2 degrees and make a run till middle of 2nd and shut her off. Check the plugs, watch the fuel pressure the entire time, how does the car feel, take down notes on a pad in the car. If all looks good... make a full pull. I would stay with whatever RPM you typically shift at for the test runs. If all looks good I would then step up to the 100 pills and repeat these steps. But again agreeing with Alan on your setup, I think 100 would be my max with the fuel pump you are running.

Are those forged KB pistons?

I ran a 150 shot with a 130 edl victor pump and t'd it off a regulator. Worked fine. I always retarded the timing. Not a ton of runs, but probably around 50 or so.

Better safe than sorry.
