I fired up the 496 yesterday. Very stressful, I am glad it is done lol
It fired up right away. :hurray: I had a small leak at the t'stat housing and a plug in the water pump. Small fuel leak at the carb, snugged them down again and all was good. No oil leaks anywhere except the oil pressure line on the test stand. I ran it for about 20-30 minutes and then dumped the oil and filter. I cut open the filter and there was some shiny stuff there but nothing unusual I think. I have the bypass plugged so hopefully it screened all the crap out.
Dam, does this thing sound mean. I think I am going to need bigger or better tires

I am going to adjust valves this morning and try tuning the carb. I took a video with my digital camera but don't have a clue how to post it. I will look into that

I was in the garage early yesterday playing with the timing and carb. At idle the timing jumps around a bit and from my research it might mean a vacuum leak. Idles better now but seems like it is surging a bit. I am not sure what would cause that. It also takes a bit of cranking and a good shot of fuel to get it to start. Definitaly needs more tuning.
My dad who is 80 came over and wanted to hear it run. He was standing beside it when it started, I thought he was going to fall over when it fired.
I had a friend who wanted to start his new 350 build and break in the cam so we took mine off, installed his and broke in the cam. That went fine also.
I was in the garage at 7 am yesterday and never quit until 9 last night. Long day with a few good rums at the end sitting in the garage with a bunch of the guys.

I think I am going to remove my intake this week and check to see how it was sealing. I used ultra gray on the end seals like I have on the small blocks. I remember after I installed the intake the ultra gray seemed to take a lot longer to cure than usual. I am not sure if there was an issue there or not, but going to check anyway.
I am also considering ordering a carb from pro systems.

Glad to see all went well & you are making noise. Cool engine test stand :thumbsup:

If you remove the intake I use The Right Stuff by Permatex for the ends
Killer stuff just make sure you prepare the surfaces correctly or sometimes it will bite you

What we do
Set the intake on with the gaskets to see how much bead is needed
Remove the intake, BrakeKleen the intake & block & blow it off
Smear a light film of Right Stuff on both surfaces with a finger to be sure it adheres
You will feel it if it does not, feels like rubbing it over an oily surface
If you wish to stay with silicone I do the same thing
Be sure you push some into all four corners where the head/block/intake meet real good
Put your bead down & set the intake on
Bolt it down lightly & let it sit for a few hours then torque it
I have not used a torque wrench on an intake for a long time but the spec is 30ft lbs from the center out if you want to check where you are.

Mike, I used the felpro 1212 intake gaskets as per AFR. What do you use on the head side of the gaskets for sealer?
Also, today I checked the plugs and found 1 quite loose :clonk:

I am going to try the 'right stuff" this time.

I just put a little silicone around the water ports & a little to keep the gasket from falling down
Gaskacinch which is like a contact cement on the head side

Good stuff Jerry sounds like you need more timing in dizzy ....irratic timing at idle try stiffer springs in the dizzy .esp til you get carb tuned ...... get at least 20* initial 22* is better .....starting to advance 100-200 higher than idle speed .sounds like it advancing at idle .been there

Bill, I have the e-curve distributor, no springs, just adjust a dial. I tried 18-22 degrees and 10 more with vacuum advance. To be honest it idled better with just 18 initial and vacuum advance disconnected.
This big block is a different animal compared to my 406.
with the 406 I run 20 degrees initial with another 10 from vacuum advance. I am going to redo the intake first as I just have a funny feeling it isn't sealing.

My buddies were giving me a hard time when they heard it run. I am always the one wanting a fairly quiet ride with no fender shaking wild engine. I told them this would run like my 406. I kind of misjudged that.
