I have a tendency to disasemble broken things and keep screws, bolts, nuts, switches, etc..., anything I think my be useful at some time. Yesterday I installed an SI alternator. Should bolt right up no mods needed, I'm told. WRONG! The lower bracket needed a hole drilled in it so the bracket could be secured to the back of the new alt. No big deal except there was about a 5/16th" gap between the bracket and the back of the alt. Go to the trusted, remove things from broken things before discarding box and viola there is the perfect spacer. Don't you just love it when things work out :D Pete

I got one of those "gadget boxes" also. It's called my garage. I love it. :)

I have three
the garage
the room above the garage
and the attic
and when I can't find something I will spend the rest of the day looking for it
and mad as he!! that I didn't think to put whatever it is I am looking for in a better spot when I was looking at it last month - thinking one day I'm gonna need that and should put it in a better place
if ya know what I mean

Oh, I just love it when you're looking for that "something special" in the garage only to not find it where you think you kept it and, as you keep looking, you start "seeing" it everyplace you look thereafter. I just drives me NUTS!!!

I actually have a special drawer for those really hard to find, oddball items that you know you'll need sooner or later. Neighbor came over one day, asks if I had one of those 5/16" to 1/4" air cleaner stud adapters for an Edelbrock carb. Opened my little drawer on the cabinet, and there it is. He turns to his buddy, says "I told you he'd have one. Now you owe him one, when you come across one." Still haven't got one back, but if I run across one again, it'll go back in there. ;) That drawer has saved me numerous trips to the store.

The only problem the drawer has over flowed on to my garage floor and now its all piled up to the celing, LOL So now I just make numerous trips to the store, its easier, LOL.. And when my wife knows Iam in the garage se says its easier to call me on the cell phone or call for a search & rescue than to go looking for me, LOL hehe:D

The worst thing is to look for something where it actually IS, not see it and continue searching all the rest of the places where it's NOT. Almost as bad is having something for years, not needing it and tossing it in the trash, only to need it 30 minutes after the garbage truck drove away.

so how many times do you look for something

you look in the same places you already checked ten minutes before (like it will appear there with magic)

and it still isn't there
Too many times to count. I'm still looking for the wire cutters I used two days ago while converting my alternator. I know there in that garage somewhere just don't remember where I set them down. Yeah I know I'm getting old. Pete

What I do is set up a little drawer cabinet (not the tiny drawers but 6"x4"x3" ish). Then I try to catigorize things alittle.

Bushings
Clips
Snap Rings
Pins
etc

gives me abetter chance of finding it when I actally need it. (notice I said better chance....I am also a packrat and often look for hours for something I know I have Somewhere.
