It seems a little early. You don't go by the engine assembly, you go by the car assembly date, which would be later. The alternator was put on the car at the final assembly plant, not the engine plant.

Would an alternator with a 9J22 date be to early for a Jan 23rd built car with a engine build 12/30/69? If I did it right, should be Sept. 22nd 1969.

I'd look for an alternator dated between 10 weeks-4 weeks before the car was assembled.
