Working on an alternator/battery charging problem.

On this particular alternator there is the usual hot terminal and a field winding "terminal".

When the engine is running there is not sufficient charging but when the field terminal is jumpered to the hot alternator terminal the alternator works and charges at 14.2

OK so the purpose of the field wire is to excite the alternator so it will charge. This usually works through an indicator light on the dash.

If there is a problem with the dash indicator light circuit, I assume it is ok to jumper the field terminal to the hot terminal.

Can the jumper be left on or should it be removed once the charging is initiated?

what alternator do you have? It's makes a difference. see the thread "alternator wiring with drawing" right above this one. Of course, it might be below it by morning so look around.
