Ok I have yet to buy one of these tools, I'm a home hobby fabricator, I'm looking for a unit that can cut more than 1/4 in but won't break the bank, any thoughts experiences or recommendations?

What is your budget? Breaking the bank to one guy is something different to someone else.

I bought this one a few months ago. The thickest plate I have cut is 3/8" and I'm happy with it so far.

These are usually pretty well cared for so I would consider seeing whats on Craigslist as well. Ive seen a few pretty good deals on used and nearly new units but the timing was never right so I never contacted the seller to pursue it.

A friend has one of these. Got it on Ebay for less than $400. You can find them if you jump on the right auction.

It works pretty well and will do everything yo want it to do. I was surprised at how controllable it is. I used it on an Impala resto project we were doing and there were areas with 3 and 4 layers of metal spot welded together. I could just erase one layer at a time and only cut what I need too.

The consumables are available on Ebay for cheap too.
