Had a problem with my VR, reading high voltage on the gauge. Researched this site and the Wells solid state VR715 seems to be the fix of choice. Can not find one in the great state of Alaska. Have a new VR, points style and am getting close to 16 volts, anyone know the routine for setting the points to achieve 14.5 volts? All the parts houses around here cross reference the VR715 back to a points style reg. Interested in adjusting to proper voltage. All the posts I find say its not worth the trouble, just replace with the Wells unit. Great if you can find one.......... Anyone know the proceedure? Thanks, Craig

Maybe someone else adjusts them, I haven't for years. They are usually close out of the box if they are good. Not every one always is good. If the regulator isn't grounded well, the reading could be off. An open between alternator to regulator wiring can make the reading high.
I'd complain to Wells about not having a distributor up there. This thread might be some help.

Thanks for the info John, I think I have fixed the problem. Went "on line" and scored the Wells solid state unit from AutoZone.com. Local parts houses around here are Napa, Shucks, Carquest, few Mom&Pops. You would think that the USA made Echlien VR from Napa at 40 bucks would be just the ticket. The guy I talked to on the phone said it was soild state, wife hauls it home from Anchorage (100 mile round trip, it's not, points type) and regs to 16 volts. Not good. Napa man going to be seeing me soon! I would like to know what the internal "goings on" is all about with the points type. Two sets inside that there box, how do it know? Things that make you go Hummmmmm....... Craig
