I have a '64 Malibu with a 454 bored out to 468. It's got a Demon carb. Sometimes when I start the car I get back pressure (or a backfire in the engine). The fan and belts turn and then the backfire will happen and actually push the fan and belt back in the opposite direction.

So, I talked to a neighbor who said that there must be some gas leaking down into the cylinder. The engine will also try to keep running after I turn it off (dieseling). This all seems to point to excess gas. So, I was out adjusting the idle a bit and when I turned the car off I kept hearing a noise under the air filter. The accelerator pump was still squirting gas. It kept doing that every 10 seconds or so until I re-started the car and turned it off while still in drive (to keep it from dieseling).

Do you think the issue is too much fuel pressure (didn't have time to check it) or another carb issue?

Please be kind to me, I don't work a lot on cars and for a female figure I am already out of my element here :)

Thanks,
Tammie

several things can cause it-if you have a mech fuel pump, it has some pres. still in the line after you shut it off(press. stroke) and if your n/seat isnt sealing good, can cause it to shoot a little-heat can also cause the fuel to
"cook" a little in the fuel bowls, and force some out, not likly this time of year, depending on where you live-if your running an elect fuel pump, ck your fuel pres.-timing can cause starting problems, either to advanced or retared-so you have some things to look at-good luck
