Im sick of trying to figure out what is the culprit of my ac system so Im replacing the 2 last parts that havent been updated in years. Does anyone know who has the best prices on compressors and evaporators?

I deeal with www.ackits.com a lot. Good prices, quality parts, great to deal with. Watch out going with the "best price". You will get exactly whay you pay for. The cheap compressors from the "chain" parts stores are only a step or two above scrap.

What is wrong with your AC?
Unless the evaporator is leaking, there's not much to go wrong with it.

the evaporator is possibly leaking and might have a blockage or something with it. Been working on the system for months and have picked it apart and replaced or checked everything. The compressor is noisy and is old and does seem to be leaking too after puttig dye in. Ive lost 1 1/2 pounds of freon in the last few months.Pressures are fine and the system should be working but total warm air blows.

R134 or r12?

If its been converted to R134a it is possible your POA valve is not working properly. They don't seem to like the high pressure of R134A. You can send it to a place in Tampa that will rebuild it for R134a or you can put a "modern" version one on it that works slightly different thatn the original. I just put a new compressor in my 72 got it at NAPA for $153 and has a 2 year 24,000 warranty. (replaced the heater control valve as well to get that warranty). I put back in R12.

I have a straight tube replacement POA aand have had that for the last 8 years. Took that off and cleaned it really well. I can get a new compressor for $275. Is it worth just paying a bit more and getting a new one? I aam having problems finding a evaporator though.

You really should consider putting a POA valve back on. Those eliminator kits just don't work very well. The POA adjustment for R134a is very simple and makes a big difference in the operation.

Instead of guessing about a $300 evaporator, why not remove it and take it to a radiator shop to have it tested? A leak is very possible, butI seriously doubt that it is blocked internally.

A brand new compressor is never a "bad" idea.

+1 on the Old Air Products recommendation.

Blaster,

I'm piecing my a/c system back together as well. The only parts I didn't change out are the evaporator and the expansion valve and, of course, the evaporator had a leak. I ordered new ones from "Classic Muscle" in South Carolina. The evaporator was 260 + shipping. They had it in stock and it shipped out the next day.

I received it yesterday and it looks pretty good. I'll be installing it this weekend. I'll let you know if there are any problems.

http://www.oldmusclecars.com/

Kind of hard to navigate their site but click on "Chevelles", then "Order Parts", then enter part number 3016987 and click "Search" It will show you a photo of the part.

It didn't come with o-rings so you'll have to order some or get them at the parts store.

I installed the new evaporator last weekend and it fit perfect. I also installed a new evaporator box as well since I had everything apart. I have an appointment for Monday to pressure test and charge the system. I'll let you know if there are any problems.

Where did you order the evaporator from?
Make sure to have them add UV dye to the system. If you have a leak down the road, it will make finding it easier.
