One of my drag racing mottos is: "Any day at the track that I can drive away in the same car is a good day". So it was a very good day, since it was a 100 mile round trip that was a nice cruise in the beast (the car was driven to, and from, the track).

My hopes were high for a mid 10 pass given http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106520 , but it didn't quite happen that way.

I got one sloppy 10.97 e.t. at 124.94 mph in a squirrelly pass that revealed several issues. My line lock didn't engage so I did not get a good burnout, only a 1.73 second 60' time vs. previous 1.57 60' times. The car did not launch straight and required a lot of steering corrections all the way down the track, I even short shifted into third to straighten it up a bit. My thoughts going down the track was that maybe 12 psi was too low for my 9" tread width E.T. Streets. Back in the pits one of my buddies who was filming the launch said that he heard a couple of mechanical "clanging" sounds from my car when it launched. Everything looked good underhood, so we jacked up the back end. We found several problems. My bolt on H.R. Parts N Stuff anti roll bar had twisted its axles mounts backward. The driver's side was only twisted an inch or so, the passenger side was ~ 3" twisted. It wasn't that it hadn't been torqued down, because the bolts were all tight. Maybe it didn't like the link bars to the frame not being perpendicular to the ground. I should have replaced the link bars with something shorter to suit the underbody frame on my El Camino. H.R. Parts N Stuff had told me I was the first '65 ElCamino to use their bar. While the car was up in the air we also discovered that when my rear suspension was at full extension (when my car launches both the front and rear of the car lift as it pushes the rear axle toward the ground) that my driveshaft is touching the "X" in my new exhaust crossover. So now we knew where the two clanging noises came from and why the car handled so badly.

I'll be back at the track on November 12th, and after correcting the issues we found I hope to see mid 10's in the upper 120's.

When did you go to Fontana? This morning? Yesterday? I wonder if I'd be able to request the day off the next time Fontana is open. Well, good luck on fixing your problems. I'd love to see run next time.

I ran my '65 at Fontana on Saturday. The PSCA Fall Nationals is a three day event, from Friday through Sunday. I went back today to cheer on my friends and enjoy a good drag racing show. The fastest car today ran 218 mph - something I might never have expected from a parking lot based dragstrip. One of my favorites was a big old ugly '63 Bel Air that ran in the 7's at 175 mph.

I'll see what I can do for getting the video online.

Just a day in the welding shop should put me in shape for the next drag races.

Congrats from me too:beers: . I would also like to see some video if you can post it. BTW, what do you think of the rear sway bar? I am thinking about one of those for my 78 Malibu.

I was there as well, slowed the car down to run the 10.60 index class. Qualified #7 with a 10.64. Top three cars went from 10.602-10.609.
Lost first round with a 10.62 against his 10.65. I know I can be competitive in this class once I figure out how to cut a good light on a .400 Pro Tree footbraking off pretty much idle and a 28"x4.5" Front Tire.

The track is a lot better than it was when it first opened. What I heard at the Summit Finals when i raced for Fontana is that they will be closing down that track for the circle track to improve their grandstands, and they will be building a new track on the north side of the circle track that will be flipped 180 degrees and run west to east. This will benefit the ETs and speeds seen at that track, since I think every race that I have run their I have had a pretty significant head wind.

Mike, that is a beautiful '69 you have. I'll stop by and say hi the next time I see you at the track. Now all I need to do is to figure out how to get your 1.39 60' times from my '65 and I would be very happy.

I hope that the Fontana dragstrip relocation gets done without any hiccups.

Thomas,

Those 1.39 60's I was using the Hoosier Radial Slick 30x10.5Rx15 extremely quick on the line, however on tracks like fontana, and irwindale I had no consistency from run to run. Those tires require a well prepped track. I ran those tires at the Summit Finals in Bakersfield in '04 and they dead hooked every time with 60's right around 1.41-1.42.

Since then I have switched to the 29x10.5x15(W) (18175). I have to say that this tire while a little slower is a lot more consistent on marginal tracks such as fontana and irwindale.

My 60's now are right around 1.48 or so. Deep staging this weekend I was right about a 1.53-1.55 60'. Leaving at 1600-1800 on the Footbrake

Bob, I'm not complaining mind you - more like I'm excited to think of the potential once I get a few issues straightened out.

Mike, thanks for the notes on the different tires. Probably one of my car's limiting factors is that I am a lazy ass who does not change out the tires at the track - I race on the same E.T. Streets that I cruise everywhere. Part of the deal is that a lowered '65 is not the easiest car to change out wide rear tires - changing rear tires/wheels on this car is a real process. I know they are a bad wet weather tire, but I only drive it when it is dry. Driving them everywhere probably sucks out a lot of the good traction oils too.

yeah that is true, having a dedicated set of tires for racing would more than likely benefit you. My tires are relatively easy to change. I have to jack up the car and put it on jackstands and then lower the rear end to get the tire out of the wheelwell. I rotate my tires side to side every 10-12 passses.
