Been looking at these year Vetts to buy. I talked to a guy with a 90, and he said it had a new GM crate motor for that year. I thought that years came with Alum heads, but he said he thought they were not alum. Didn't that year have them? Also it has the suspension that you can adjust, to different rides. He said the light is on and does not work. Any Idea how big a deal to fix? Also can you just put on regular shocks, and not use the settings?

the L98 got aluminum heads in '88, i think, and kept the same heads until they switched over the the LT1 engine in the 92 model year.. so, yeah, it should have aluminum heads.

Adjustable FX3 suspension can potentially be rather expensive to repair. No way to tell until you get a proper diagnosis.

You can install standard shocks, but do you really want to do that???

GM replacement crate motors may or may not have aluminum heads. Depends on the exact motor he got. Corvette first got aluminum heads around mid-year 1986.

Yep had 113 heads. You probably got a low compression replacement motor

FX3 parts are expensive, parts no longer made. when you can find youll pay for them. C4s will nickel and dime you if you buy a "fixer" its not easy like an old A body. Many discontinued parts and Vette specific ($$$$).

Get the nicest trouble free well maintained one you can find.
Unless you can wrench on them or know them well they will bankrupt you.
ON the other hand they are cheap get good mpg and are super fun to drive.

They have the TPI intake so dont expect to make any hp with it.

if the shocks are toast, might as well take the opportunity to swap to a coilover setup... probably be cheaper...

The C4's are definitely a great bang for the buck car if unadulterated, but if it were me, there is really only one year that I would specifically target, and thats the 91; The last L98, and the first with the nicer bumpers front and back. But thats just me...if you prefer the earlier bumpers then it really just revolves around what dashboard you prefer.

Great handling car, and the L98 is no slouch!

Love the 90's myself. Still squared off, but a MUCH nicer dash layout.

I believe AFR offers an L98 replacement. Iirc, the L98 was a 58cc chamber. So, AFR could be an option, however, hard to say what the current motor really is without pulling it apart. 58cc chamber may not work in current config.

if i was to get a C4, it would be whichever 88 and newer car i could get the cheapest... i just want the good suspension setup and the best brakes... i don't care about the engine- it would be getting an LS swap of some sort... i don't care about the dash- it would all get torn out and replaced with stuff that isn't operated with electrons.. i'd prefer a manual- a 4+3 and not the ZF- but an auto wouldn't be a deal breaker..

Stay away from the Nash 4+3 transmissions and go with the ZF,if a manual trans is what you want. If you're going to leave the L98 alone,I would prefer the auto trans. Unmodified L98's run completely out of breath around 4,500 rpm but make alot of low-end torque which favors the automatic.

Thanks guys for the info. Have not seen the car yet, but talked to the guy who is selling it for the owner. He is a repair shop, and has done the maintenance on this car. He checked and it, has alum heads. Also new fly wheel and clutch. He also said the have replaced the dash, which I know can be a problem with these cars. He said the suspension problem is one of the front shocks is the problem. That is something I'm not sure if it is something I can fix, without spending a lot of money or not? Was that suspension standard, or up grade? Thanks guys. He is asking $6400 for the car seems like in the ball park price?

Certainly cheap enough to buy. The replacement dash is kind of a red flag for me. Seems like there's a lot of potential for issues around the installation. The adjustable suspension is an option. Lots of potential for electrical hassles between the suspension, dash, replacement engine, etc.

For $8k could you find a more original example that's less "fiddled with" and decent mileage? I feel like an extra 1500-2k up front might save 3-4k in hassles down the road. $.02.

Was the L98 the stock motor or an optional motor ? I read the last post where he said the motor has the alum heads but I was under the impression the L98 was a step above the base motor.Just asking is all.
Also a friend of mine has an 86-7-8? Vette that he added the later 90 something bumpers to,looks sharp and looks like factory unless you know what to look for year wise.
