I'm planning on hooking up my 8 track stereo. Does anyone have suggestions on what speakers to use? The stereo needs between 8-10 ohm impedence. I don't have the originals. Is there a way to use the common 4 ohm speakers being sold with some sort of modification??? Thanks

yes two 4ohm speakers per channel = 8ohms so you'd have 2 speakers on the left and two on the right..
if there is a fader it be 2 r/rear,2l/rear,2r/front,2r/front
or call boston acusic(sp?) in mass.
and see if they'll wind you some 8ohm speakers..
the factory is in mass. on the north shore..
and they're home speakers are 8ohm. so they have the parts to wind a 8ohm voicecoil..\

two 4 ohm speakers wired in series=8ohm
pos from 8 track to pos 1st speaker-neg from 1st speaker to pos 2nd speaker-neg from 2nd speaker to neg on 8 track will load load the 8 track properly at 8 ohms.
pos from 8 track to pos 1st speaker-neg from 1st speaker to pos 2nd speaker-neg from 2nd speaker to neg on 8 track will load load the 8 track properly at 8 ohms.

For about $0.50 you can add a 4 or 6 ohm 15 watt resistor to each speaker, wire it in series with the 4 ohm speaker and the head unit sees the correct 8-10 ohm load.

Correct.
Use the resitor method suggested by a couple of the members. It won't degrade your soun and it's simple. Remember that an radio/tape/amp output stage need to see impedence. However as long as you know what the unit is rated at you can take care of any mis-match and compensate by the method suggested. Also it is generally ok for your power stage to see higher impedence than rated although power will be noticeably limited. The unit's rated impedence means that a speaker or speakers of that impedance will be the best match. Going lower than that puts a strain on the power stage due to the current draw and can fry your unit. In home units if you remember they use to have various impedence speaker taps so one could match their speaker system with the output transformer for the best sound and most efficient power transfer. Not so the case with most if not all car electronics. Follow the advice given above and enjoy some vintage sound!:hurray:

Just a quick note about the resistor fix. It won't hurt the fidelity of the 8-track output but it will affect the volume. The resistor is in effect that second 4-ohm speaker that was in the other suggestion. Roughly half of the power put out by the amplifier will be dissipated by the speaker and the other half in the resistor. Since the resistor doesn't generate any sound, that portion of the power is wasted.
If you have the room and the speakers aren't too expensive, I'd go with the two speaker per channel setup. Otherwise, an impedence matching transformer will work without loosing quality or volume.
