A buddy called me today and asked me to go look at a car with him, that he'd spotted in someone's back yard. After seeing it, I told him what I thought it was worth, and he has struck a deal with the owner (it was not for sale, but the owner must be thinking he'll never get to it... and took my buddy's offer)

Here's what I saw:
72 Malibu, 350 (doubt its the original motor, but supposed to be a 350 owner says ".60over") has Weiland intake, small Holley, HEI, Headers, dual exhaust. No A/C. PS/PB, discs up front.
Has TH350 I believe, 10 bolt rear- not sure if posi or not. (Since it had not been run in a long time, we didn't ask to start it)
Last registered and street driven in 2004. Currently sitting outside, not sure how long it's been like that- owner mentioned it HAD been in the garage, but not sure how long ago.
Rear bumper "decent" has quite a bit of shine, small pitting, no rust, "driver quality" IMHO,
Front is a different story- headlight bezels chrome is bubbled and flaking, grill has broken vanes, parking light assys look like driver quality- not really any pitting that I noticed, but need the accent painting redone. Don't remember anything special about the front bumper.
Cowl (not cowl induction) hood, good condition, good trunk lid, doors look reasonably intact- perhaps a small bit of work on bottom of doors and a small patch in the skin.

Now, the most glaring item: Quarters have been replaced- matter of fact, we're not exactly sure the original one were ever removed!!! The new skins- looks like 1/2 skins- were pop riveted on behind the bumper, and probably down where the rocker panel meets the quarter, cause it's been mudded over and there is no joint showing between the rockers and the quarters- both sides....Looks like it needs outer wheelhouses, not sure about the inners. Trunk floor had carpet on it, what I did see led me to believe it would need to be replaced, as it is wet, but we shall see. The rockers seemed "solid" but sounded more like thick filler, and not "solid" metal.....Front fenders seem decent- perhaps needing a small degree of patching on the lower portion.
The convertible top is shot, along with the rear window. The interior is intact and complete, bench seat is covered with an aftermarket covering, column shift. Dash has been hacked a bit for an aftermarket radio, but that would not bother me too much. I asked the owner how the floors are, and he said they need to be replaced- but it was too wet to crawl around on the ground to verify that. Has ralley wheels all the way around, good rubber (even though rubber is at least 8 years old)
There is a nice console, complete, along with a floorshifter in the trunk.Amazingly, it is surviving there with the rear window out, and a wet floor in the trunk. So even if the front seat is toast, I think my buddy would be converting to a bucket seat arrangement, anyway.

Paint code "63" if I read the numbers right,, black interior, currently looks like faded red exterior- like red oxide primer. I think it is a good solid foundation to start with, and still a salvageable car- even with the hacked up job done on the quarters.

So, what would you think it would be worth?

You need to show pictures to get a real value. I have been looking for a convert project for a while and with the description I am going to guess between 5-6k, but without seeing the car its really just a guess.

Here's a couple of pics that were shot when we went to look at the car yesterday.

The price: $2,500.00

Did you guys check the frame out for rust? Does it have the round gauges or sweep dash? You can tell by the vin on a 72 to see what the original engine was.

As long as the frame is good $2500 seems like a very good price. I've stripped out roller convertibles that look like they've been dug out of the ocean bring a lot more $ than that

We did not check the frame- way too wet to crawl around and under the car. It is definetly a Malibu, therefore has the sweep dash. We'll give it a thorough evaluation when we get it trailered to it's new home, sometime this week.

That's what I'm thinking- I just didn't want to steer my friend wrong. I'm excited for him- and anxious to get started.

Rusted frame or not. Thats a great deal. The kind of deal that you have to jump on right there on the spot.

If your friend has the time and money (a decent amount of either, or a ton of one or the other) then that seems a solid buy. Worst-case scenario he sells it for a little bit more than that.

We have not yet gotten transport firmed up. The only pics are the ones posted earlier. Within the next 2-3 days, for sure by end of the day Saturday we'll have more pics, and more details on it's overall condition.

why can't I ever blunder onto something like that? When I have a full bank account I never find a deal...as soon as I spend my fun money....I find something...but never a chevelle convertible for cheap. :(
