I hope i am not breaking any rule, I posted this in the Body and Paint section and thought maybe it should be here.
Looking for help on the 72 SS El Camino driver side remote mirror. We need to get one, and ordered one from OPG but they are having trouble getting them and can't deliver for a few weeks at best. We have a 70 Monte Carlo in the family and it also has the remote mirror and looks to be the same one. OPG has a Monte Carlo catalog that lists the same mirror and part number as the one we ordered for the El Camino. I found another vendor that lists the remote mirror and it says it fits 70-72 Chevelles, 70-72 Montes and also 71 and 72 El Caminos. Can some one give the scoop on the differences in the mirrors for these cars? I have searched on it and can't find much on the El Camino mirrors except that they are not the same as a Chevelle. We are all ready for the paint shop but we need the mirror to know where it mounts and clean up the holes left from a bullet sport remote mirror. Sure would appreciate any info on these , thanks a lot.

If you are talking about the D-33 Chrome style " 70 " remote mirror. The mirror head and the controls & door bezel are all the same.
The mirrors have TWO bases that mount on the door, Monte Carlos & Chevelles have the same shape door, El Caminos & Wagons have a different shape door.
The mirror head has a female notch & the base has a male notch, When the Phillips screw is tightened and the notches are lined up. The mirror head will be horiziontal, I saw a 70 rag top at the Cleveland show last year with a 70 remote mirror, He was using the 70 El Camino base, This places the square mirror head at about a 45 degree angle.
My 70 SS 454 El Camino has the D-33 mirror, It was a $10.00 option in 70 when I ordered my Camino.

I dont want to burst your bubble but if this is the mirror you ordered then you probably wont be happy with its fit or the way it looks on the car. If its not to late I would cancel that order and scour the auction sites for a correct D33 mirror for an El Camino or wagon NOT a Chevelle as the door angle is different between the two. Elco/wagon remote mirrors are considerably harder to find at least where i live. Most of the ones on auction sites are off Chevelles/MC's and most cant tell difference unless it was them who took it off the car so get a money back guarentee if possible. Ask me how I know,

Try this guy although he aint cheap, I found a lot of rare parts here including a D33 for a 71 Elco SS,

Now, that being said............

If correctness and fit arnt a real pestering issue and this isnt a W code 454 car then use those they will work and function as original. Me; the way it looked on the car wasnt right because imo they were made off the mold for a Chevelle door it appears.

Has ANYONE been able to find the mounting gasket for an original D33? I am running a standard mirror until I can find the right gasket.

I've got one off a 69 which should be the same as the elky's since the door skin is the same. I've also got one off a 70 monte and will compare the two. I know the head and the controls are the same. Both are up for grabs if you need one.

Thank you. Great information. This is what I needed to know. I forgot about GM Sport, i used to live very near them too. Is the D-33 marked on the mirror any where?
Yes, that does look like the mirror we ordered but it is on back order and they are not sure when they will get it. This is not a W code , it was a small block SS. We are all set for paint but i need to fill some holes left over from a sport mirror and not sure which ones are for the correct D-33 mirror.
It is my son's and he doesn't need absolutely correct, but it did come with a remote mirror and he wants to replace it as close as we can to original. American Muscle Car Parts lists the mirror as fitting chevelle, Monte and el Camino. I guess not.
Thank you guys for taking time to help us out.

D-33 Mirror to door gasket. My 70 El Camino, After I finished the frame off, I took me two years to find the " Correct " gasket. Some Chevelle guy in New England had one.
Not sure about the repo gaskets for a D-33?
I believe I have one or two " Chevelle " D-33s If someone needs something.

Thanks again. Ok , to recap all this- are the mirrrors the same and only the base is different?

So will a Chevelle or Monte mirror be close and mount the same so if we ever find the actual mirror we need would it mount in the same position and mouinting holes?
thanks guys, sometimes I am a little slow.

Rich, I sent an email back. The assembly manual for 69 only lists one part no. so that leads me to believe the chevelle is the same as the elky for 69. As all doors interchange on the elky from 68-72 it seems likely the 69 chevelle mirror is the correct piece. I don't have a 70 or later assembly manual so I can't check the later years. Maybe someone else can check?

The gaskets are definitly different. Chevelle and Monte Carlo are the same for 70-72. The Elcamino and Wagon are also the same for 70-72. The Chevelle and Elcamino for these years are not interchangeable. The Chevelle/Monte gasket is more sqaured off in the front and the Elcamino/Wagon comes to a point in the front. Just as the chrome bases are shaped. The plate that goes on the door panel is different for a 72. 1970 and 71 used the same mounting plate for the remote lever.

Mine is a 71 SS 454 Elco and that mirror from OPG looked like it was tilted upward when put on ours -kinda funky looking but I ran with it till I found a real Elco D33 unit in San Jose years ago. IMO there is no way OPG could have test fit this mirror on an actual 68-72 Elco door. As for a 69 Chevelle D33 mirror fitting a 68-72 Elco you may be onto something there-tellz us if it looks good and is not tilted upward, meeze has to know.

Thanks 1971ss454Elco .

So from my searches , D33 is just the option code. I can find it listed on a lot of cars , even a 75 Chevelle LaGuna. Oh well, it is fun to learn all the little details.

I believe if memory serves that the D33/D-33 remote driver mirror came standard on Chevelle/Elco when the SS package was ordered starting in 71 running thru 75-77 maybe?? Obviously the mirrors in 75 didnt look the same as a 71-72 mirror but the code was the same I believe. I know the sport/bullet remote driver mirror plays into this some how in 71-72 but I"m not sure,
Someone else know?

thanks Real Red70 for the pictures. it looks like the 69 Chevelle mirror might be a winner. I have a 69 chevelle parked next to the 72 we are working on so I will take a look at the doors. it makes sense that the doors are the same for 69-72 El Caminos. I have an assembly manual also for my 69 but it only shows a non remote mirror in my book. My other son has a 70 monte Carlo so we have been checking his out, but he is so far reluctant to let me rip his apart to test fit his on the 72 .The monte also has a stock appearing remote driver side mirror. You guys are a great help, thanks to all. My son with the El Camino is trying to get hold of the guy he bought it from. The Previous owner had it for 20 years and said the mirror was broken off so he added the remote Sport (Bullet type) mirror. I just want to get a mirror on there and know it fits and mounts correctly before we take it off to paint. details details.

The remote sport mirror did not look so great to my eye, plus you cannot open the windwing window as it hits the mirror. the chrome mirrors seem to fit the style a little better. But mostly my son is trying to stay near original as much as he can. He thinks the sport mirror is worth selling on e-bay or some where. He has a pair of them. Only drivers is remote.

Not to hijack his thread, but if anyone has the correct D33 gasket (71 Camino) they could sell, please let me know!
