Hey all,

I'm getting back into the swing of working on the car. I currently have most of the front clip disassembled for cleaning and painting (looking NICE!) but I noticed something the other day. Two of my SS wheel center caps have the "deep" sticker area while the other two have the "shallow" area.

Does anyone have the story about the difference between these caps? Is it possible to have both kinds from the factory? I've owned the car for coming up on 25 years and it's the first I've noticed this.

I read somewhere that back in the days there was specific center caps for front disc brakes.

Originals were deep.

Late over the counter replacements were the shallow ones. Part number wasn't changed though, just the design.

The earlier replacement caps were the same as the originals then for some reason later on they changed.
I got my replacements from the dealer in 1985 and they are like the originals.

Also there are two types of the shallow ones - bolt on type and fall off if you hit a chuck hole type.

X2 on the deep centers being original. The shallow ones are later issue caps. GM did sell the shallow caps as replacements, but the original and earlier caps were the 1/4 inch deep versions. The later caps could most likely have come from a different vendor.

Wow. Either my memory or my math skills are REALLY slipping. I just looked at Team Chevelle membership join date. 25 years? More like 16! Wow.
