I wasn't getting much response in the transmission section, so I thought I'd try here.

I have an 84 C20 2x4 Suburban with a stock 350 & 700R4 transmission. The vehicle has around 120k miles and the tranny has never been rebuilt. When I purchased it the odometer read 50k miles (had it 10 years). Since I've owned it I have replaced the filter and fluid 3 or 4 times, most recently about 4 months ago. When the fluid is replaced, I'm not able to drain all fluid basicly whats in the pan (5 to 6 qts.). The fluid appears very clean, no burnt smell and is at the correct level.

Within the last week or so there seems to be an "intermittent" whine coming from the tranny. Sometimes you will hear it in Park and also in gear. Doesn't matter if the truck is up to temperature or not. Sometimes by putting it in gear or taking it out of gear the whine will go away. It can be heard as the transmission is running up through the gears, (noise increase when RPM's increase) but once up to speed (in 4th) the whine is gone. The transmission shifts good; Firm, no slipping. (it shifts as good as the day I purchased the truck).

Any ideas?

Thanks for your input. :)

It could be a number of things, in my exp I've had pump issues before. What you need to do is get the pressure checked or find a shop that can do it for you. A clogged pump will cause the needle to shudder under pressure increase. A check you can do is unhooking the TV cable and while running in park, pull out on the cable to simulate a load, if your noise varies with the pressure increase problem found. Torque convertors usually make noise in gear and the noise tends to lessen as the vehicle moves away from sitting. HTH
