OK Guys what way should i go..... about 400 HP to the flywheel with my 355 SBC..... the 700r4 or stay with the th350. Both trans would have a shift kit. I have 373 gears in the rear. I drag race the car on the track about once or twice a month, and it is also my everyday driver. Along with that question also comes if i did go with the 700 what torque converter is everyone using? thanks for the help guys.

Look at the gear spread of the 700r4, big first gear then it drops off too much from 1st to 2nd.....If you go OD with that much power you can get a 200r4 that will handle that kind of power easily and a perfect swap with a th350, no drive shaft cut, just move the crossmember back a bit.........

700r4 1st 2nd 3rd OD
3.06.....1.60......1.00......0.70
200r4
2.74.....1.57......1.00......0.67
th350
2.52.....1.52......1.00..............

200r4 or stay th350......

I ran a 700r behind a 450hp 355 and it was great for hiway driving and once in awhile at the track.
I do not recommend the 700 for an all out drag application as they seem to lose more power than the th350 but for a car that is only raced for fun it would work.
I used a 9 1/2" 3400 rpm converter that flashed at 4000.

fwiw....I run a built 700r4 behind my 607 hp/627 ft.lb. 496 motor in my 67 chevelle. I also run a 3.42 posi rear. it has a 2075 rpm "corvette" torque converter. my cam is a sl ft comp xs-290-s-10so I also have a vacuum reservior for the brakes..by far the best of both worlds...65 mph = 2400 rpm w/26.1 od tires all around....smokes the back tires at will.....

No doubt his first gear will be a mother......
My question for you is how long have you had this setup? How often do you drive it? Do you drag it, if so how many runs with that combo?...... I am not saying it cannot be done, but longevity....... If he is going to drag this, I m just saying there are some other options..... He will have to do some mods since the 700r4 is not a direct bolt in like a 200r4 or th350......

I have a 700R4 behind my 11.60 second 1990 Camaro. Hundreds of passes and a good bit of street driving lately. This summer I replaced the original transmission (only a shift kit) with a performabuilt model. Turns out the original trans was fine (I had a different problem)! I run a Vig 3600 stall converter, synthetic fluid and a big cooler. And don't tell anyone that I am still on the original 7.5" 10 bolt...SSHHH.

reply: have not drag raced the car yet because I still owe some dough on my motor. my trans was built by a local drag racer who works out of his home garage. he knew all the tricks (corvette servo, stacked clutches, ect.) to make it live behind that motor as I told him beforehand what I was doing....
my car (67ss) came with a 396/325, powerglide and 3.55 posi rear. (fast driving lady original owner). after these latest changes it is much more streetable.
john you are right on it - it has a monster 1st gear !!! with the od trans am getting about 13-15 miles per gallon....not too bad for a 2 ton car with 600 hp and a fairly tall rear gear.....imho.... trans has been installed just over a year now with zero problems....

no one should be debating the fact that a 700R4 can handle power, its just that a 2004R is a much better choice. the amount of money you will save in engine wear and tear and gas mileage with the 2004R will be gained back over the initial cost and then some, over time.

building a 7004R is so 1990s. get with the times.
