Im looking at the lokar floor shifter for my 72 with bench seats and 700r4 trans.... from what i read the lokar will make my car a full time tiptronic type trans...
now will this eliminate my use of the TV cable ? im assuming so because it seems i will be shifting directly from the trans. but my whole life i have learned bad things from assuming.

also they say i will not need to remove trans for install... any thoughts on this ?

and lastly having bench seat will i b able to mount it comfortably between seats and dash ?

Thanks guys

You will need the TV cable to keep pressures where they need to be so the trans will shift when its supposed to.
I dont understand how you can eliminate the cable.
Dont all shifters shift directly from the trans? My shift cable is connected to the trans.
I think you can mount the shifter anywhere you want it as long as you have the correct length rods for it. There should be plenty of room for it between the seat and dash, my 4 speed shifter fit there fine.
Maybe I dont understand some of your questions

I dont understand my questions to much either no worries.... I thought the TV cable ran right to the carb. and that decided when the trans would shift ? So i was thinking with this new floor shifter that would b eliminated and i would be the soul decider of when it shifts....

Mayb im thinking that this unit will want me to shift gears manuallly like a tiptronic in an automatic car... or is it still fully automatic just like my column shifter is except on the flooor ???

The TV cable runs from the trans to the carb, you still need the shifter cable hooked up. The trans will not work correctly (if at all) without the TV cable. The TV cable is tricky to adjust correctly and it has to be right. You will also need to get the correct carburator brackets to get the geometry correct for the cable.
It will still be automatic just on the floor.

the TV cable is independant of the shifter, trans to carb, affects line pressure for shifts
the lokar is the same thing as a col shift lever, just switches from park, rev to forward gears
the lokar shifter can mount in 2 places, on tailshaft or about midway on the trans, which ever is the best fit
you prob need to look a little more into what you want to do
Lokar also has a univs. setup if you want to retain your col shift

Thats for the info. it seems this isnt what im looking for than.

What would i need to control the shifting myself ? aside from a manual.

I just removed my Lokar shifter from my '71 and replaced it with a console and horseshoe shifter. The Lokar was the floor mount style and none of the shifter arms would work with the 700R4, I made my own and it worked flawlessly. The reason I decided to change to the more traditional shifter was because I had it given to me and now my wife can drive the car without wondering what gear the car is in (I shifted by feel as my shifter had no indicator). If you decide to go with the tail stock mounted shifter you may have to pull the tranny to get it in as there isn't much room between the floor and the tranny. As far as being able to use the Lokar with a bench seat, you should not have a problem because you can move the floor mount ahead far enough to avoid any interference. If you want I can post some pictures of the arms I made to get an idea what is needed.

Old thread I know, but I just want to throw out a little info on the subject. I used the Dakota Digital Gear Shift Indicator to see what gear I am in with the Lokar shifter and a 700R4.

Also, I used the supplied rod with no modification, but that was on my 70.
