All:

I need some help choosing a 700R4 and Converter for a project. I'm needing a transmission for a 71' Camaro with a small block.

While this isn't a 'Camaro' site, I've found great insights on all things chevy here, so I'm hoping for some input/ help.

I have a core 86' Camaro 700R4 that was stored outside for years . . . it will need completely gone thru, from wear . . . and from corrosion. When I picked the tranmission up, water poured from the case. This transmission was basically free . . . which may be what it was worth???

I've been advised by a local transmission shop to build a 700R4 from a 88-92, because they're set-up with auxillary valve body cases, and Throttle Valve cables. Input?

I was considering looking into the purchase of either a full manual valve body for the 86' core as part of the rebuild process or a constant pressure valve body from TCI, to address the issues inherent in the earlier versions of this transmission. Two concerns here . . . #1 The car will be a 90% street use vehicle that I may not want to manually shift everytime. #2. In talking with reps from TCI I was left with the distinct impression that the constant pressure valve body produced for the earlier transmission would not correct the issues this transmission had.

So. The core question. Rebuild the 86' ? or opt to pay an extra $50 for a core tranmission this rebuilder has? Which is supposedly the newer style.

Next question. Torque converter selection for chosen 700R4.
Engine is a 406 Chevy with 9.9:1 compression, GMPP Stage III heads, Crane retro-fit hydraulic roller cam .509 intake .528 exhaust, induction is a 750 CFM Edelbrock, with a Edelbrock performer RPM intake. Crane recommends a stall converter of 2500 RPM with intake, headers and gears.

Like mentioned previously the car is a street 71 Camaro with full interior, 3.42 gears and a 245 45ZR16 tire. Because the car is a street use car, Honestly, I'll be willing to give up 1 or 2 tenths, to have better street manners.

Looking for input.

If I had to do it again I would have put the manual valve body in my 700R4 from the get go. I had problems with the shift points from day one. It was stack shifting so I changed the governor and added a spring to the tv cable. That helped a little but still shifted to early. Then it wouldnt stay in manual 1st it would shift into second anyway. So I finally had enough and installed a manual reverse pattern valve body. I love how it shifts now except for it flares going into third at higher rpm. Its also got a 2500 stall. For me I dont mind manualy shifting. All my other vehicles are manual trannys anyway.
