I have a 70 chevelle with buid sheet, the car has what appears to be a factory installed vynl top, but I see no mention of it at the bottom of the build sheet, in fact it says upr 14 silver, lwr 14 silver, and in box 44 it has 14 14 b 14 for color, I suspect its not original to the car, has anyone come across an option not on the build sheet that the car left the factory with? I know most anything is possible. also the car has no hood and no ZL2 option on the build sheet so I guess no cowl hood but in box 55-air cleaner is the code ss any idea what air cleaner that was? another thing the car has A/C on it but again no mention of it on the build sheet, shouldnt that also be noted at the bottom of the build sheet, this A/C setup does look factory even the dash has the right vents. thanks for any help

My car has Cowl Induction and the Gauge Package. Both options have been on the car
since the early seventies. They seem awful
original. Maybe dealer installed?

So are you saying that the cowl tag also has the 14-14 code for paint? If its a factory vinyl top, it would be indicated as the upper body color on the cowl tag.

The code in box 55 should be SS for the air cleaner with a NON cowl hood. The code for the cowl induction air cleaner is DG and block 107 will list the ZL2 option also. I can't say for certain, but I think the non cowl induction air cleaner is the dual snorkel type. As far as the vinyl top goes, anything is possible. Mistakes were made and although rare, odd combinations do exist. Do you have the bill of sale or window sticker? Perhaps the car was ordered with a vinyl top but that information didn't get entered on the build sheet. My guess is that it was a dealer installed option. My buildsheet shows 738 in box 52 (A/C Compressor). Does yours? Seems to me that installing a factory looking A/C system back then would have been a little too complicated for a dealer.

1970 Air cleaner codes.
SS-is an open element on Non cowl ind.Bulge hood.
DG-is cowl ind.with one snorkel.
CO-is Dual snorkel used on non-cowl ind.Bulge hood.Very rare and sought after.200 chevelles came with it or less, is the current guesstimate. No records exist.

Where did you find the air cleaner codes? Do you have codes and their meanings for other blocks on '70 build sheets. I have tried to decode mine to a certain extent, but not completely.

cortez - wish you luck on decoding your buildsheet. I have the RPO code C08 listed on my buildsheet for my vinyl top listed in box 107

All TC members - It would be great if we could all help compile a list of build sheet codes here on TC for all model year Chevelle build sheets. If options are identified in box 107 with RPO codes, what are the other codes called?

I try to decode as much as I can from time to time. The air cleaner codes were from viewing cars and talking to owners as well as from ones I've collected. For the most part the codes are usually formatted in colors, letter suffix,or last digits of a part number. All so line worker could easily identify a part without waisting to much time.
