In process of trying to figure what the heck I have here... Thought it was a Camaro block but increasingly it looks like Chevelle... Block 3969854 cast G8 8 Suffix coded CE 0606 89 TO 318 ET... Block will be here soon and I will take more pics... Any help on figuring this out will be appreciated... The front pad stampings are hard to de-cipher as the CE looks like GM stamping and some of the rest look like a dealer or whoever hand-stamped the rest.... Again, I need help in figuring this out and then will be up on the block (no pun intended)... Pics available!!! T.

I believe CE stands for Counter Exchange as a gm replacement block. It was probably a dealer installed replacement for a blown engine. This hurts value as far as originality. So value is basically condition it is in, bare block or /heads/crank/intake?

CE is for Chevrolet Engine and would be Chevrolet line independant, i.e., not Chevelle, Camaro, etc. specific. The 060689 is the ID number for the engine itself and not the car; 0 is 1970 and 60689 the 10,689th engine from Tonawanda. Sounds like the T0318ET stamping was done at home or by a machine shop to (probably) recreate the original date and suffix code. "ET" was the suffix code used on 67 and 68 396/325 w/TH400 engines and since their warranty might still be in play, it could be a warranty replacement for one of those but there's no way to ever know for sure.

An #854 block was a 402 casting number and production did not start untill about August 69, so I would bet that is G-8-9, not G-8-8 as stated. 8's and 9's are often mistaken for each other as they look very similar as cast. Agree with Dale that someone has stamped the ET to make it appear as original to their car. CE engines came as fitted blocks or shortblocks.

Good morning Dale and Jeff! When I receive the block w/ main caps and pistons and rods, could I send some pics as I am putting it up 4 sale and in no way do I want to deceive anyone who may be interested??? I have a couple now, but, I will take better shots, and kinda zoom in on possible sites where the VIN might be stamped, i.e. the area near the oil filter and, I have heard, on the base of the starting mounting pad.. If you could mention other sites that might hold VIN stampings pls. let me know.. I am also in touch with CRG on this block and they are waiting for more shots... Thanks for your help and advice in advance... Ted

If it's a true CE warranty block it will not have a factory stamped partial VIN anyway. Anything other than the CE identification number would have been stamped by someone outside the normal chain and always open to suspicion. Another location for a partial VIN is along the rear bellhousing flange. I'd like to see the photos though when they are available. :)

Good afternoon Jeff / Dale!!! Have finally gotten 'round to the 402 CE block. I have found no VIN on the oil filter vertical location but I have found numbers under the starter mounting area similar to numbers on the suffix coding... Kinda interesting to say the least. Who would've ever thought to separate the starter from the block and the numbers appear??
I can download them Tuesd. or Wednesd. p.m. if you would still consider helping in the above... Thanks!!! Ted
