Anybody know if chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid have a rpo. number or is designated some were on my build sheet? I see some have them and others don't. I got it with custom junk and don't see any thing on my build sheet.

The chrome valve covers were a standard item on a '70 SS. The air cleaner, however was available in three different forms. On your build sheet, in the box for the air cleaner, there is a code. If you don't have cowl induction, option ZL2, then most likely you have a code "SS" for the open element air cleaner. The open element air cleaner had a chrome lid and a black base. If you HAVE cowl induction, then your code would be "DG" and the lid for that air cleaner is black. There was a third air cleaner, a dual snorkel closed version, that is very rare, and I am not sure the 396 cars even used it.
So, to recap my ramblings...
Valve covers-Yes, chrome
Air cleaner lid- code SS, yes; code DG, no.

I think it is worth pointing out the reason that nothing about the valve covers appears on the build sheet. Since this sheet is for car assembly plant only, the only options or RPO's appearing on it are things actually installed there. The valve covers are installed at Tonawanda Engine Plant at time of assembly, and as such, are already on the engine. No need for them on a build sheet. Dave's answer about the air cleaners are correct, and I can add that the Dual Snorkel air cleaner was LS6 only W/0 cowl hood, and only some of them.

Jeff or Dave, my 70 SS has a chrome lid on the air cleaner that I thought was correct. after reading your posts I checked my build sheet and it has DG in the air cleaner box. ZL2 spc duct hood. So in fact this lid is to be black?? If so what finish? semi? Thanks Norman

Hi Norman,
The chrome lid is not correct for your car. Cowl Induction air cleaners never had them, but a lot of folks just ordered a chrome non-cowl air cleaner lid over the parts counter and replaced the original black one. The correct finish on it is regular gloss black. But be careful not to make it high gloss, as the original used no undercoat and did not get a real heavy coat, so sometimes the reason that they were not real glossy is that the paint had very little "Depth" to it. The whole air cleaner should share this finish. Semi-black is not correct.

Thanks Ya'll. I have a documented 70 396/350 and I didn't know what the color of my air cleaner was suppose to be. My build sheet also says DG. I have ZL2 option as well. My car has 65,000 miles but the engine was freshened up in 1987. Thanks, I love this site......
