It is my understanding that the SS stripe was an extra option in 69- or was that only for the 300 deluxe SS (standard on malibus?)?
Just curious to know how many of you had/have SS cars that didn't come with the stripe originally? TIA
Ron

Our '69 COPO Chevelle had the D96 decal stripe and cost about $36.00. Our 300 Deluxe SS396 came without the stripe We added it during the body and paint. It wasn't standard equipment because a friends COPO Chevelle came without the stripe. Still doesn't answer the question though.

1969 body paint stripe is RPO D96. Available on all 2 door Chevelles, inc. El Camino. Not available on any 4 door models.
Out of a possible 346,406 cars, only 37,280 had the stripe. That equates to about 11%.
This info was found in the "Chevelle and El Camino ID Model Codes" Book, second edition, published by NCOA in 1989.
And you thought I pulled this info off the top of my head !

Don, I think there was some confusion there, since the Z25 SS option was available on any V8 2 door model. IMO, the D96 wide stripe was only available in addition to the SS option (Except COPO 427's). There were approx 86000 SS equipped cars, so 37000 D96 optioned SS's would be a little less than half. About right. I was 20 years old then and I don't remember seeing the "SS" stripe on anything but SS's. If it were available on any 2 door, I think there would've been a lot more D96 stripes produced. Sorry Nate, this is only my opinion.

I agree with Von about just the SS cars came with the stripes. My dad bought a black 69 with red stripes and red interior new. He also bought another 69 in 1971 a dusk blue car with no stripes with a 396 375hp engine with auto on the column.

Now with what Keith says, the stripes were available on the copo cars, but the literature says that the stripes were only available on SS cars. So, the copo cars got special exception to the rule, and then otherwise, the stripes were only available on 2 dr SS cars (including El Camino) AND was an option that must be specified in addition to the Z25 SS package option - Correct? Is that the consensus?
If so, what is the guess-timate (%) of SS cars with the stripe?? Thanks...

OK Ron, let's do some figuring here.

According to my source there were a total of 86,309 SS's in 1969 (1,400 300 Deluxe 2 door post, 1,789 300 Deluxe hardtop, 71,297 Malibu hardtop, 2,104 Malibu convertible & 9,717 El Camino).

Now, according to Nate there were a total of 37,280 vehicles that came with the stripe. That works out to 43.2% of SS's got the stripes.

Not factored in is any COPO's with the stripe.

Just got off the phone with a friend of mine who has been restoring Chevelle's since before most of us were born. Well, maybe some of us. He specifically remembers an original 1969 El Camino 307 car that a friend of his had some 20 years ago, with the stripe. And the book I have backs this up. It was available on non SS models as well. Just not on 4 door models.

I think that the majority of the D96 optioned cars were SS, but some non SS models were ordered with it too.

Only my opinion again, the stripe decals could be ordered and dealer or otherwise installed on any 2 dr someone felt like installing it on. Before delivery or after.

I should have said dad's cars were both SS's.
I still think a dealer could add the stripes though.

Nate:
I have those copies as well, but your copy seems to be 'less over exposed' than mine.

That page seems to have a footnote that would show an asterisk by any item that is SS only, and there is no such * by the D96 item, making your proposal seem quite valid.

Nate, my copy of page 8 of that set is very poor - any chance you could buzz me a copy?
thanks!

Nate: I need the page not posted (page 8 I think) that is big 5? column list, not a table like the ones posted. An email would be great, like a .jpg or whatever is easy?
Thanks in advance,

When our '69 was shipped to the dealer it had a scrape through the stripe on the driver's front fender. They ordered the new piece and I installed it myself. When these cars were new any of this stuff was available for probably a couple of years or more. A friend has a '69 L78 Chevelle and he bought a new set of decals from GM away back then and used them just a few years ago when he restored the car.

I would really like to hear from somebody who has a non SS with the D96 option.
Or maybe somebody has a build sheet that shows it ordered on a non SS chevelle.
For you guys/gals who have build sheets for your 69 chevelles, check them to see. Maybe they were not put back on after a repaint ??

Nate
