I currently have a 69 chevelle which I am trying to determine wheter it is an SS or not. Obvious clues are quickly changing as i find more and more little things that make me go hummmmm. Now I am to the exterior and I have a question on trim, my car currently has what appears to be trim mounting attacments at the bottom of the door on the sill exterior. I have looked through many references including the assembly manual and do not find where trim was attached to the lower portion of the car on the sill. Many show trim on the door, fenders, and qtrs but not below the door. Any help or ideas will be appreciated. Thanks AM

Are you talking about little metal buttons that look like a nail head sticking out? That is what i have that holds on the lower trim on my Malibu. I am not sure if you could get this trim on an SS car or not. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Trim on the bottom like the car above was not offered on the 69 SS Chevelle, only the Malibu. If you have holes or buttons in this area the car was a Malibu.

Probably a Malibu, but COULD be a Malibu door, hastily put on an SS car (but prob. not.) Need to look some more for other attachment points for the trim along the bottom of the quarters (if not filled in-check inside trunk area). Good luck in either case, another '69 is always a GREAT thing!

Thanks for the input guys.....the trim mounting i am talking about is not on the door..it is attached below the door opening.....the passenger side has multiple bolts along it and the drivers side only has a small strip at the trail edge of the door with a single mount...it's unusual. I'll try to get some pics if it ever stos raining. understand about the malibu trim...just curious...if anyone has seen trim like this i need to investigate if someone self installed it or it was done factory. the search continues....

Sounds like a '69 300 Deluxe without the SS option. Looking at the dealer brochure, the 300 Deluxes had a thin chrome strip at the top of the rocker panel just below the door. Does your VIN start with 134 (V8) or 133 (L6) ?

The vin is 136379B323XXX, I have one door that appears to be changed and it is a 300 door with 13437 stamped into it, but it is a Kansas door from the assembly tags. The driver door is original and has the black overspray and BAL tags. A few other things are it has a 12 bolt...gutted by someone but the code is CF 1115B K 8, a 3:31 posi. there is a dual fuel line main line and return. There is a gauge package with a 5500 redline. Of course i believe this to possibly be a transplant appears to be a repainted dash green under the black. There is a map light in the mirror and the door panels have 753 stamped on them made in OCT of 68 car assembly is second week Nov. with a 755 trim number and i searched to no end for any documents, not a thing only a mouse nest in the headliner with what appears to be ANY and ALL papers, candy bar and others, that were left in the car. still have a few places i haven't looked but it is very slim to none chance that i will find anything. thinking the only hope would be that it could magically be an export to canada and they would have something....who knows. I am not sure about the trim but maybe it was specially installed for someone. still looking at it since the weather is clearing. need to look at the fenders to check for additonal hidden holes. appreciate the comments...would like to see a pic of a 300 with the trim can't find any. thanks again guys.

Our base model '69 el Camino has a lower spear that sounds like what you might be talking about. 136379B indicates a Baltimore built '69 Malibu hardtop. Could also be an SS car with these numbers but not if it has the lower body trim. Even the 13437 300 Deluxe SS396 cars didn't have this trim. Their outside trim was identical to any other SS396. I think that most, if not all, '69 Malibus had silver paint in the rocker area. The 5500 redline was for the L34, L35 396 engines. 755 was the code for the black vinyl Malibu/SS bench seat interior. Good luck finding a '69 Baltimore built sheet. I found none in either of our Chevelles. Not that they don't exist, as some have been found in other cars.

Well guys, I have had a chance to dig into this trim issue and have determined that someone must have added it for some reason. I come to this based on the fact that the mounting pieces on each side are different, the drivers side has a single metal strip with three mounting holes and oddly spaced other holes in the rocker and the passenger side has individually mounted single screw clip mounts. They too are oddly spaced and I would guess not factory installed. I checked the heater cover check vin and it is a match so that is comforting, however the cowl has a small additional vent from rust, it's never that easy is it. Addtionally i have determined that the car was damaged pretty good on the passenger side and the fender and door were replaced....and now the deck lid appears to be from the same donor car. This one is an adventure...shame some Chevy engineers didn't think to SAVE the build sheets for the SS cars at each of the assmebly plants for a money maker in the future......or did they....Have a good christmas everyone.
