Okay all you experts,
My Tach has a 5500 rpm
orange line and a 6000 rpm red line.
My question is did different horse power 396's have different red lines ?, or were they all the same. Original engine lost to the ravages of time. But I would be thrilled
to find out that an L-78 (375 horser) once lived there.

5000 Redline = Small Block
5500 Redline = 396 325, 350 HP
6000 Redline = 396 375 HP

Is your car a factory 4 speed? All 68 375 HP cars were 4 speed cars and NO air cars.

Hope you have what you want....

The link does not work.....but if redline is at 6K, it is a 375HP Tach.

Hey.I was just on eBay and i seen a 68SS with the same redline tach as mine, its 6K,but the one on eBay has all the stuff that a 325 and 350 hp 68 has.Stuff like the auto trans and the 325 sticker on the air cleaner lid.I thought with a redline starting at 6K, like mine http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/ss396revs
it was a 396/375HP tach.

Could someone with a real L78 please verify the redline for me.

Thanks,Michael

Got a question for you guys. Is it possible that the orange and red redline markings can get distorted over time? Mine starts at 5500RPM, with a original 327, but it looks all orange to me, no two colors to it.
