I have a real SS 68 elky, 138 vin. It came new with a 396 and 4 speed. About how many were made with the 4 speed out of the approx. 5100 super sports that were built? I don't have the build sheet, it might be on top of the tank, but what are the chances of it being a L 78 motor because it came new with no air condition? It also came new with disc brakes.

It is certainly possible it was an L78, but it is equally possible the cruck was ordered without air bacause the buyer was cheap, or is was destined for Wisconsin. The only way to tell how many 4 speed Elkys were built would involve Mission Impossible type of investigation as well as some sort of time travel.

yeah I had thought myself disc brakes were mandatory with those, but someone had told me there were some with drums up front for the ss; I didn't really believe it, but it was enough to make me think that anything might be possible. I looked behind the glove box, and pass side kick panel for the build sheet. I don't have the original seat in it anymore, so I cant look there. I have found them before on top of the tanks, but always in bad shape. Has anyone ever heard of them behind the door panels? Do you think the tank is the most likely spot?

Air was not as common back then, especially in your region. Disc brakes were manditory with a BBC.

That is true for '69's, but disc brakes were an option in '68 on all models, and relatively rare with less than 13,000 of them sold. '68 used the 4 piston calipers, '69 and up had single piston calipers.

Only the total numbers for options are available, it isn't broken down by the model (Malibu, SS, Elky, etc.).

Fremont-built cars were the only '68's that have been found with a build sheets, the other plants used smaller Body or Chassis Broadcast sheets. These papers have been found in kick panels, behind door panels, stuck under the dash, and probably many other places.

Approximately 3/4 of all Chevelles built in '68 were non-factory A/C cars.

That's a interesting fact about the disc brakes in 68. I guess its fair to say that my elky is a rare piece? Its anyones guess about how many of those 5100 ss elkys are left, and it narrows down when you add 4 speed and disc brakes into the mix.
