Hello Everyone,
This is my first time posting, but I have been having a problem with my 68 Chevelle door locks. Let me give you some background on the car. It is a 1968 Chevelle SS Clone. Now let's say I lock my passenger side door and close it the lock will pop open and unlock the door. I'm not sure if this is normal but it's not really a problem I just lock the door with the key or lock it from the inside before I get out of the drivers side. Now the problem is on the driver side. If I lock the door then close it I cannot get the door to unlock with the key. I have to climb inside through the passenger side and yang up and down on the lock about 100 times then it will pop open. If I lock the door outside the car with the key then try to unlock and turn the key the wrong way then I will have the same problem. If I press the button to open the door while it's locked then same problem. If I even look at it the wrong way same problem. If I am super carful and lock the door with the key and make sure I don't touch anything else then sometimes it will work correctly. I have replaced the locks so I am kinda at a loss. I am hoping someone here has had this problem. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem with my wife's 82 corvette... I had to pull the locking mechanism out of the doors and soak them in gas overnight.. Then I blew them out with a air compressor, then sprayed them with silicone spray lubricant, work like brand new now... I think over the years all the dust and dirt gets into the original grease and turns into a cake like mixture... Good luck...

The latch assembly sounds like it needs a real good cleaning and then lubricated. The old grease and dirt can keep it from functioning properly.

Most of the time an original assembly looks like this

and after cleaning will look like this

The passenger door when closing with the lock button down will stay locked if you hold the release button on the exterior handle in when closing the door. The drivers side should operate the same way unless the assembly has been changed to a newer year.
