Bucket seats and console/floorshift are indeed optional. They are not standard equipment.

A bench seat was standard equipment for the 67 SS396 (bucket seats were an extra-cost option). The shifter for automatic transmission equipped SS's was on the column, unless the car was equipped with the optional console. If you ordered an SS with an automatic, bucket seats, but no console, the shifter would still be on the column. The standard transmission for the SS was a 3 speed manual, which had a floor mounted shifter, regardless of bench or bucket seats. My 67 SS396 has the standard bench seat with a column-shifted TH400, and I have had many people question this over the years.
