Back in Nov of 09, when I first joined up here, I told the story of a 67 L79 Malibu that I ordered the summer of 1967. It was ordered as a Deepwater Blue 2 door hardtop, but came to the dealer from the factory as a 4 door hardtop. I looked at it and refused delivery, and the dealer ordered another car for me. Long story short, that 4 door sat for 2 years on the dealer lot before a young farmer with a couple of small kids finally bought it for about 1/2 the sticker price. In the years since, I've been trying to track that car down, it's gotta be rare, right? Had no idea where it was or even if it still existed. Checked with the dealer, DMV, even the Chevrolet archives in Detroit. All records were lost. The original dealer and salesman are now deceased and no one remembers anything about that car. This all happened 46 years ago. Well.................

At the same little car show that I attended about a month ago, 8 miles from that dealership, I heard about a farmer that bought a new 67 Malibu back in 1969. Dark blue 4 door with a 327/4-speed. From the same dealer that my mistakenly ordered Malibu came from. After many phone calls the last couple of weeks, and one really good one last night, I think I've found it. Supposedly it's sitting in a shed about 40 miles from the dealership. Supposedly it was parked after a few years of use because the wife didn't like the 4 speed, so they bought something else. Supposedly still has the original engine and tranny in it.

Gonna take the trailer and camera and look at it today.........:D

Hi Steve,
I am anxiously awaiting photos. Sounds like a really unique Chevelle.
Do you still have your 67 L-79 Malibu?

Hi Steve,
I also went back to read your incredible story. I just sold my 68 L-79 Malibu in January and the new owner picked it up this past weekend. I think I probably made a mistake selling the car, but I know that I sold the car to the right people. They were absolutely thrilled with the car and it is going to receive all the love to restore it to better than new condition.

Def sounds like an interesting car. My brother in laws older brother showed up im my shop with a 66 Biscayne four door. 427 four speed car. Bought out of Arkansas with every piece of documentation imaginable. Even weird stuff like logs of every service and mileage based on fuel cost.

A good friend of mine ordered and bought new a 68 Chevelle wagon, with the L-79,and a four speed. He had young children then and his wife was on him about not buying anymore hot rods and getting something more practical. The whole time he was ordering it,the salesman kept saying,"are you sure you want this?"He finally wore the car out, pulled the engine and junked it.He still has the engine in a 62 Corvette.

Ok, the BAD: Through all the phone calls, I arranged to meet the son of the original owner of this Malibu at a gas station near where the car is stored. He was to take me out to the farm. Met him yesterday as planned, but he said his Dad now does not want to sell the car. I asked if I could look at it, and he politely said no. Apparently they have found out that the car is rare, since our last phone conversation, and now the son wants it. I asked him about the engine and trans, he said it still has the sticker on the original chrome air cleaner that says "327 325 hp". It has the original chrome valve covers and 4 speed with Muncie shifter. Even the rear antenna just like I ordered on that first car back in 67. The Dad never threw anything away, so there is documentation in a file cabinet. Those are all questions I asked during our phone calls. The car has been sitting on a dirt floor for the last 30+ years, so it's pretty rusty according to the son, and the critters have gotten into it. So....I think it's the right car, but I can't buy it or even look at it.....yet.

The GOOD: We are going to keep in contact and he is going to send me detailed pics of the engine, interior, exterior, and underside. He even asked if I would help with a restoration "when the time comes". I've heard THAT story before...........

Came home empty-handed but with hope that maybe someday I'll be able to at least look at the car.

If you ever get a chance to see the docs (window sticker, POP, etc.) I'd really be interested in seeing it. Maybe say you'll offer to help with the restoration but you have to see the paperwork, get photos of the engine/interior/etc. to truly verify the car is worth your time.
