2-3 years ago, I decided to fix the w/s washer. Replaced the valve, new hoses etc. When I put it all back together, the 4-tooth plastic gear that drives the washer mechanism broke. I didn't bother with it until today.

A few months ago, on an extended trip to Tx, I got a complete wiper motor assy from another 67 Elky(but could have been a 66, both were sitting side by side). Turns out the washer mechanism is completely different than mine. Among other things, the 4-tooth gear is metal with about a 1/4" shank and the cogs appeared to be approximately 1/32" shorter than the original plastic gear. I ground off the long shank to match the shank on the original and installed. The washer mechanism solenoid operates continuously, but (apparently) the shorter gear teeth does not move the lever far enough to advance the pump, then reset to the next actual pump cog.

Two questions: First, why does the washer work continuously? As far as I know, the wiring is correct. I jiggled the wiper switch with no change.
Second, does anyone have a source for the 4-tooth plastic gear without buying a complete unit?

Don't have a source for piece parts but I'll try on your pump always on problem. One thing 12 volts is always applied to the pump. The pump works by switching ground. There is a small connector with two wires on the pump. Yellow is 12 volts, blue is the ground control line. I assume you have pulled this connector off and the pump stops. Next try applying 12 volts to the pump where the yellow wire goes without hooking up the blue wire. If the pump runs, there's a short to ground inside of the pump. If the pump doesn't run the problem is with the blue wire or the switch. If it is external, might try hooking up the pump connector again and pulling the connector off the switch.

Thanks for the response John. I'm getting visions of gremlins at work here. When I disconnect the 2-wire connector(blue/yellow), the pump continues to try to run.

Guess I'll cinch my do-rag down tight so I can't pull my hair out and start from the beginning. I think I'll reassemble the replacement unit I bought and test it. It will fit, but the washer assy is just different. I didn't want to pull the cowl vent and risk paint damage, but looks like I may have to.

Thanks again.

If I understand you correctly your saying that the pump wants to run when the plug is connected and not with the plug disconnected. If this is true then look for the problem to be with the blue wire making contact with ground. Either along the length of the wire or at the switch. When the wash cycle is initiated a coil inside the pump unit latches the mechanical pump drive. After one revolution the drive is unlatched. If the coil has continuous ground the mechanical will not unlatch. If the pump runs any time the wiper motor runs with or without the latching coil connected then the latch/unlatch mechanism may be damaged.

If you can’t find the plastic star at a parts supply look for one on 68-72 Chevy trucks. The wiper motor is under the dash it will have the same pump drive star as the 67.
