The firewall has dimples for every hole GM may have used for options that were installed. Some are used , some are not. And of course some holes have been added over the years by owners.

I just smoothed mine out this weekend and was wondering the same theing. I see why some people want to remove the vin tag on the cowel it's a pain to work around. The tip someone gave about useing Copper behind holes to weld them over works Great. Learn something new every day.

I think Simon is talking about the excessive amount of "dimples" in the 66 firewall. They all have it with no rhyme or reason regarding their location. It is my opinion (hold comments!) that these dimples are the result of a pick hammer relieving stress on the firewall when the firewall and upper cowl section were welded together. Maybe this area had a tendency to "move" under stress and heat and by hitting it with the pick, stress was relieved. This is what I keep telling myself.
