From the factory the positive terminal was closest to the fender. There is no problem using this battery as shown as long as your wire connections are long enough to reach.

That looks like a battery with both top posts and side posts. At the risk of stating the obvious, if you are not using the side posts, you can pick that battery up and turn it 180 degrees if you want the positive terminal closest to the fender.

I would put the negative at the fender, to heck with the factory correct. With side post batteries I would want the side posts facing into the engine bay and not the radiator support regardless of the factory configuration. Place the plastic plugs in the terminals if not used. Less chance of the battery shorting out if the fender or rad support gets crumpled in a collision.

What are your goals, show points or functionality and safety.

For safety and function leave it as is. Get a battery cable with a 12 or 10 gauge lead in addition to the main neg lead. Ground your cable to the engine. The additional small lead to the inner fender.

Every Chevy I ever bough had the negative terminal next to the fender.. Chevrolet had the brains to install the battery, starter and fuel pump on the passenger side to help over come all the extra weight that the steering box, column, steering wheel, pedals, interior switches and driver put on the drivers side..
Aligning Pontiacs was always such a pain because of the extra 3 to 400 pounds of parts and a human body put on the cars drivers side. I've already had to put over a full degree of extra positive caster on the passenger side to get them to stop pulling to the right..
