I took apart my non-tilt steering column on my 66’ SS, 4 sp floor shift car about six months ago to replace the turn signal switch, I finally got it back together yesterday. The problem now is the lower column cover moves up and down about ¼” inch and is loose. The column cover being the part that slides up from the lower area of the bottom of the dash to meet the upper cup part that houses the turn signal switch. I can’t find any extra parts that I could have left off? It was tight before I am sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated and pictures would be great too!!!

If the cover can be pushed up into its correct position by hand and it fits correctly, then it seems you have a problem with the two retaining screws. Maybe they aren't tight, or are too large and not fully made up to take the slack out?
Sometimes the holes will strip and it may be necessary to use a larger screw or a small bolt with nut on the backside of the dash.

OOOOO, Yes the column cover does slide up from the lower area of the bottom of the dash to meet the upper cup part that houses the turn signal switch and fit tight. I am not home right now so I can't look but I know I did not screw the lower column cover to anything. Does it screw to the bottom of the dash or the cover inside that covers the steering shaft? Thanks for your help!!

Not sure mine is original, but it fastens
to the dash, and is held by two sheet metal type screws.
