I have disassembled my alternator 69 Malibu 6cyl engine) cleaned all the parts and have started to reassemble. How the heck does the brush assembly go together ? . If the springs are installed under the brushes, there is no room to place them on the stator rings when the stator is placed into the field windings. There are no suggestions in the Chassis Shop Manual.

Use a straightened out paper clip or similar piece of wire through the hole in the brush holder, out through the hole in the back case to hold the brushes in place.

After assembly, pull the paper clip out.

My Thanks to Mike for the repair manual & My thanks to Dean for the paper clip tip. After closely examining the brush holder I can see the holes for the retainer. I have decided to replace the brush assembly.
