I am trying to find out about 78' Malibu 2dr hdtp w/305 muncie 4spd which appears to be all factory. The vin doesn't show it so I am wondering if anyone has info on this option. Most books don't speak much of the 4spd option.
I owned a couple of `78 El Camino's that were factory 4-speeds. One was a GMC Caballero/Diablo with 350/4spd, the other an ElCamino SS with 350/4spd. `78 was the last year you could get a 350/4spd combo, but not available in California. In `79 the largest engine you could get with the 4spd was a 305.
I have some paperwork somewhere that gives some of the production stats.
I found the build sheet for both of those Camino's in the headliner. Be careful pulling the foam board headliner down, they're usually very brittle.
The 4-speed was offered in the Malibu through 1980 with the 305. In 1979 you could also get it with the 267 V8. Like was mentioned by the previous poster, you could also get a 350 with a 4-speed on ElCaminos & GMC Cabellaros in 1978 only (something to do with CAFE exception or the fact that as late as '78 the ElCamino was still considered a truck federally).
Monte Carlos were offered with the 4-speed in 1978 only, both with the 305 V8 & 231 Buick V6. At Pontiac the Lemans was offered with the 4-speed in 78/79 with the 301 V8 & 231 V6; same with the Grand Prix (only 50 GPs made in '79 with the 4-speed). Oldsmobile offered the 4-speed with the 305 Chevy, plus they offered an early, light-duty T5 5-speed behind the 260 Olds V8. Buick offered the 4-speed behind the 231 V6 in 78/79 (79 turbo V6 was automatic only).
The transmission is definitely not a Muncie; they were last used in '74. The transmission that was used on the 4th gen A(G) bodies was the Saginaw, RPO MM4.
A guy in our local car club has a '78 Malibu Classic coupe with a 4-speed, but power now comes from a '72 Z28 350
