Generally speaking, which of these two cams would be the best choice in a 3700 lb. chevelle and mild street 489 with a 9.6 CR, small tube headers, TH400, 2400 stall, and 3.31 gears?

Lunati VooDoo 276/284 Hydraulic (#60204) 233/241, .554/.572, 110/106
Lunati 272/282 Solid (402A2LUN) 238/248, .550/.570, 112/106

This will be strictly for a daily driver application. But, it still needs to have good crisp response, power, and reliability.

Thanks for any opinions, Charles

I am running a Comp XE284H in my 496, 67 Elky, 10.2 CR, TH400, 2600 stall, 3.31's AirGap and Holley 870 Avenger Carb. It rips! Not a daily driver, maybe a bit much for that, but it does a good job! I am sure others will chime in with their picks. It never hurts to call their tech guys.
From the 2 you list, for a DD, I would go with the hydraulic cam just for ease of maintenance.

I have a 10.2:1 496 with 781 heads with 2.19I/1.88E valves, RPM Q-Jet with a stage 3 Carb Shop 3310 Holley, 1 3/4 inch headers, and an Engle HL-25 Solid lifter cam (.560" I/E, 242* @ .050", 286* adv, on a 110*). The idle was quite a bit rougher than I expected, more than I'd want for a daily driver. It revs very fast, like a 12:1 SB. My only complaint is the idle. I'd recommend the smaller hydraulic for a daily, or have the solid ground on a 112*, which, IIRC, I saw Harold recommend for 496s.

Which would be the "stronger" of the two cams for the street in this 489? I was thinking the small solid might be, and I don't mind going with it since the valves don't need adjustment for a year or so as Harold Brookshire has stated.

I personally wouldn't go smaller than a 280+/235+ solid cam b/c I would be afraid of making SOOO much low-end that it would be a parts breaker! That's why I picked the 282S, b/c its just a standard 2000 to 6000 rpm solid lifter cam is all...

BUT I also know Harold's advertised duration numbers are a schosh smaller than most so beware. AND that they are SOTA so will produce MORE POWER then the old standard 282S..
