I’m looking at a 454 for my 69 chevelle. Guy wants $1200 it’s pretty much complete except carburetor and distributor, he recently pulled it said it is a running engine doesn’t know much about except that it was rebuilt about 10k miles ago and has a small cam and sounds healthy, said it’s a early 70s engine. Just wondering if it’s worth the $1200. Thanks.

For me, it needs to be oval port, not peanut or rectangular.
And only if the compression is 9.5-1 or 10-1.
You might be able to see a piston dome with a spark plug removed.
Flat top or dished pistons = I'd keep looking for a better deal.
If you live near Nashville, I have a nice 454 shortblock with 10-1 forged pistons and roller (without lifters).

If you post the engine & head casting numbers and the numbers on the pass side those will tell more about the engine but who knows what's been done to it, look in a spark plug hole for a piston top

063 heads were 1969 and possibly 68? large oval port 100.9cc 2.06/1.72 valves 396 & 427, wasn't 272 block 396/427? I had 2.19/1.88 valves installed in my 98/99cc 063 heads

that engine would be worth around a grand IF someone needed it for a restoration but it's not a 454 and you would be better off passing on this engine if you really want a 454.
I'm just wondering if its a 4 bolt main engine ? Also if that guy really thinks its a 454 why does the seller think that ?

You have to ask yourself who sells an engine after only 10km on it, it has issues and he wants them to be your issues. To good to be true is never more true then today.
Not 10km. 10k miles = 16,000km. :)

Now, if it were really just 10km and for that price, yes, I would agree, something is probably fishy. As it is, from the casting numbers, it looks like it is not as advertised anyway...
