check this out:

This is the culmination of a year of weekends working on my 66 Chevellle project. I am a once Pontiac, now Chevy guy!! I started other postings on this set up over the past year-check out my statistics. The reason for posting is so all could see/hear what a 454 with standard bore and cast pistons (junkyard find- no machine work) and pocket ported 781s and Comp Cams Hydralic Mother Thumper Cam and Sean Murphy Quadrajet Performer RPM intake Dougs 1-3/4 inch primary headers and 2-1/2 inch Flowmasters sounds like...

This combo was suggested by Mike Lewis (Wolfplace here) and let me tell you-it's a REALLY nice setup. THANKS MIKE!!

Goal was to have a 12 second STREET car on a budjet that SOUNDS like an old school ride from the 1970s...I had a 13.3 second at 107 mph 67 Firebird with a built 440 (428 + 0.060) and this little 454 kicks it's butt. Last weekend I laid down 75 foot posi marks and had to lift because I was in our neighborhood street! Closest track is 120 miles away, but seat of the pants feel is a 12 second car. Using a TH400 with gear vendors unit and an Edge 3000 rpm stall convertor.

This motor was assembled with the help of my studious 12 year old...no oil leaks, no smoke (water condensation only)!! Total cost on the rebuilt 454 motor, carb ($400) and headers (Ebay $440) was under 2000 dollars!!

Sounds awesome!
Sounds awesome!
X2

btw, your Firebird would have ran 12's with traction...107 MPH is good for easy mid/low 12 second ET's
...always remember ET indicates traction and MPH indicates HP
Sounds real nice.Goes to show what can be accomplished with a well thought out plan.
Guy
Very nice souding car, I bet you'll have lots of fun!
Music to a car guys ears!!
man, that does sound good-pretty cool
I like the the sound of dat!
Did you slap it on the hiney to bring it to life?

I like those junk yard builds.

Hope somebody got a picture of ya'lls faces when it fired up. LJ
SWEET!!!!!!!!!

dude seriously, what cam !!
Gonna assume this is the Muth Thumper 287. Interesting is the timing event are close to the XH284 Extreme Energy hyd flat tappet (based on seat timing).

287 Int open 40 BTDC / close 67 ABDC......Exhaust open 80 BBDC / close 45 ATDC
XH284 open 36 BTDC / close 68 ABDC..... " open 82 BBDC / close 34 ATDC

But, the 287 has .510 lift intake / .495 lift exhaust, while the XH284 is hitting .574/.578 lift. Gonna guess the 287 will be a little easier on the valve train. Positive side of that Thumper cam is the 102ICL should help the lower compression motor create some added port velocity.
Man that sounds great.
Sounds decent. Once it was warmed up a little, and you tapped on the gas pedal to lower the idle, what RPM was that idle at?
This Comp Cam is Part Number 11-600-4 "CB279T H-107 T Thumper"
SN#: VA2018-07 12/12/07.

I started it up cold at 1:30 minutes into it I slightly nudged the throttle and the idle set a bit low to 700 rpm in Park. So, what I then did was turn in the throttle stop over the next minute to get the rpms to 900-1000. Sounds wicked in gear...

That's what I kinda thought. the idle sounds a bit too low at first.
