454 project but new to BBC's

Posted this on the preformance page by mistake,

Hey, just need to pick some brains of the guys that have been through this before.

I've been poking around the list and search function trying to get some ideas and you guys seem to have it all together!

I just picked up a 73 454 out of a vette.

Its got the standard Q'jet, 049 heads with about 66K miles.

Looking to move it up to the 425-500 hp level coupled to the TH400 for street use on pump gas.

Not looking for a NOS set up or anything that extreme.

I'm certainly new to the BBC scene. Haven't opened it up yet but trying to put a plan together

Any suggestions on what to do with the heads, ie bigger valcves worth it or bowl work, piston changes, manifold and carb or efi. Not trying to get into aluminium heads route or hugh $ but rather 60-70 muscle ideas.

Trying to learn the tried and true from you guys with the experience.

Thanks Dick

i say this would be a good plan, budget minded

just do your standard machine work that it takes to prep the block.
choose some pistons from KB to give you a 10 to 1 compression or maybe just a little more to 10.5 to 1

run your stock rods and crank

run a stock oil pump. no need to run high pressure pump.

heads big hp right here buddy, a must do, clean and port the heads, even just a back yard home porting job will do the trick if you have some knowledge of porting and understanding the head. just do a basic clean up of all the runners of the rough little bumps and casting flash, work the short turn radius to make the turn smoother, have the heads cut for 3 angle valve job and have new 2.19/ 1.88 valves installed with 20 degree back cut. that would be minimum to do with out going it great details.

run a rpm style intake and at least a 750 carb of your choice

run a hyd cam in the 230- 240 range @ .050 and find the cam with the most lift you can get. bbc love the lift.

run a solid cam if you like and move the dur @ .050 to 240- 250 range and again find the lift dont forget about the lash will remove the lift numbers down.

run small tubed headers like the summit brand.

this combo will be great for first time out and budget minded for sure nothing fancy most money would be in the heads if you cant port yourself. not porting your heads at all for this combo your giving up 50-75 hp or so.
