Well I got a set of pistons and rods from a swap meet. They are forged std. bore 11:1 compression 427 pistons. I was told they were 454 pistons. So I have a good std. bore 454 block and a 454 crank that needs turned. So should I build a 427 or a 454? ill have to get 454 pistons or a 396 crank. The 427 pistons are a 35cc dome and I have 3 sets of heads, 215 oval ports 101cc, 781 oval port 119cc, and 840 rectangle port 107cc.

The current setup is 460 with the rectangle ports. But I would change that combo for the best to build another. I have 2 cars im trying to get going. One to be nasty the other to be streetable.
I have a Oval Performer RPM intake and a Summit 1302 Cam setting on the shelf at the moment.
So whats the ideas?

I would go for the 454 pistons. It's easier to build horsepower with cubic inches. The other choice is to get a set of +.250" longer rods and use the 427 pistons. But that would require some measuring at the machine shop to make sure you could do it.

Your post is confusing, do you have 427 or 454 pistons? Both pistons are the same diameter but the 454 has a higher piston pin location. The difference is .177 of an inch higher in the 454 piston. The 427 piston is lower in the piston because of the shorter 3.766 factory stroke and the same rod length of 6.136", most aftermarket rods are 6.135". Get the correct piston and matching crankshaft in order to make everything fit.

For the "mild" side, a 427 crank, with those heavy arse TRW slugs, all of 10.5:1 compression with the 781s ( you can't use the 215s, can you?), and wide LSA 1302 cam would be a nice street 427. Save the bigger stuff for the wild side. Find a GM 6223 crank. Its hard to know without them being side by side, but there is a truck version ( heavier counterweights) and a 'Vete" version.

Build the 454 and tell-um it's a 427,if you want. Most people have no idea what they are looking at .427 and 454 look the same .I've got a 540 and I think I'm going to put 305 cid decal on motor.SB and BB are obviously different looking ,BUT most of the people are clueless. If that's what it says ,must be what it is. GO WITH THE CUBES 454

Yeah, whatever. A 427 might net you around 16-18 mpg, a 496 with the big Holley 8. So unless you have very specific purpose-built goals, nothing wrong with a 427. It'll lay down 100' of rubber, just like a 454 or '96 will. Only thing is, to make big power, if that is even a goal, you'll need to spin it up to get 500-600 hp at near 7000 rpm.

Or you can be like the crowd, that shoves a 502 in the bay and never even races it once. Which is OK, but a waste of cubes, machinery and $$$ IMHO.

Sorry I build motors out of junk that I get. Hardly nothing is new and its fun and cheaper. I found a fresh forged steel 396 crank for $100 that I might get.
Anyone can throw tons and tons of money at new stuff and fancy stuff but im just a kid with limited funds and have built 8 motors out of cheap stuff and they've all ran faster than 14s even with 2.56 rear gears. My current motor only had a new timing chain, everything else was used stuff, im knocking on 11s door with traction issues.
