What heads are on it as of now and more importantly what piston does the 4o2 have.Whatever aluminum heads you pick will depend on the 402 pistons design.Flat top, domed, the wrong heads can drop your compression or the right heads can really wake it up.

IMOP The Edelbrock Performer Heads are the best for a mild street engine, they have the smallest combustion chamber volume of all of the aluminum heads on the market to help keep the comp. ratio up where you want it. I have a 408 BB with 10.25:1 comp. with these heads, it lowered the comp. to 9.5:1, just right for a street engine.

for the cost of the heads and your performance level, NO! stock bbc heads like the 049 (oval) or the 390 or such, with proper port job and better valves they will support 550 hp easy.

I have talk with CFM (creative flow management) and with good porting even what i am able to do will do the trick.

i was going to have cfm do more work to my heads and they said it would not be worth the extra cost out of my pocket because the work i did would support my hp goals. for 500+ hp out of my engine.

they could have taken my money but they seem to be honest there.

i have ran 390,290,049,148, and other heads i cant think of right now on many of my bbc engines thru the years and with just some mild back yard porting they would go easy 11's and a few 10's with out nitrous. so that speak volumes for the stock bbc head.

what hp you might gain you could find just thru fine tunning you current combo.

Depending on piston dome type here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old closed chambered large oval port head 10.+ to 1 CR. engines can run darn good like dd say's above..

They are anywhere from early closed at 96.+ cc's to later semi-closed at 101 cc's or so and the closest modern head to this size is E-brock's 100 cc aluminum "Roval's"..
