My step dad picked up a 400sbc bored .30 over and balanced and blue printed. from what I know it needs valve seats, intake manifold, valve covers, not sure about internals, has a very large cam (not sure how big). and prolly a few other things. My Step dad asked me how much I would pgive him for it and I said 2500 does anyone know how much a motor like this would normally go for??

Did you even hear it run? Sounds like no considering its missing a lot of vitals. Also, what heads are on it and how did you determine it needs seats? Is this a fresh shortblock or something thats been rebuilt and has miles on it? And even though you dont know the cam specs, how do you know its a big cam.....I assume you heard it run at one time and could hear that its got a healthy cam.....but then again, it also sounds like your dad just picked it up and somebody may have just told you that its got a cam in it.

2500 is sounding real steep. From what it sounds, it needs a top end(needs a manifold, has heads but they need done, and who knows about the cam and everything else for sure....so, it basically needs a top end). It sounds like its just a shortblock(that may or may not be fresh) and I wouldnt pay nearly that much unless there is real good stuff throughout the bottom end and the machine work/assembly has really been done well. List more specifics cause its real hard to tell anything right now.....could be worth more than 2500(possible)..... but I get the impression that its either an unfinished rebuild, or a rebuild with miles(wouldnt be surprised if it had a stock rebuilt bottom end either). If thats the case, Id say it would only be worth maybe 800 bucks to me if it was indeed a complete shortblock thats gone through a descent mostly stock rebuild at one time or another. If its got considerable miles on the rebuild, I woldnt even pay that much. If its good enough to use for a mild performance application, Id give roughly 600 for the shortblock and then put my own top end on it. But I might pay say 1200 bucks if it is a fresh shortblock with new, good rods and pistons(and of course the work is well). What casting number is that block and is it a 2 or 4 bolt?

Anyways, for it to be worth 2500 to me(especially since it needs a top end basically), it would have to be an excellent, fresh bottom end thats done right.

I'd have to know a lot about an engine and be confident in the shop to go $2500. Forged good quality internals, 509 2-bolt main block and those heads had better be good to need valve seats and still be part of a $2500 package. I'd say more like $1500 for a good build, more if it had top shelf internals. I make it a policy not to buy engines from or sell to family or good friends, but that may just be me. I'm a long way from being a professional engine builder, too. My .02

Need more input,,,,

It sounds like you are buying a core to build unless you know more about it
"Blueprinted" means a lot of different things to different shops but unless I were to personally check it, it means nothing to me.
Sounds real "racy" but what exactly was done?
If it were a good build with good parts it would be an excellent deal as there is no way you are going to build a 400 with good parts for that price especially without a core to start.
Without knowing what is in it, in my opinion at least, you are buying a block with a bunch of unknown parts inside

I haven't heard i yet, but it is fresh with no miles on it. I know it needs valve seats cause the shop wrote on the side of the heads "needs valve seats". My step dad got it off a guy that gave it to him w/ a 57 bel-air and a mig welder, the guy that sold the car to us had gotten in to the project and got tired of it.

I know the cam is fairly large, because guy that we got it from told us a little about the motor. I don't know what the heads are, and I already have the top end. I have already have some edelbrock stuf that fits a 282-400.

It already has pushrods, pistons, rockers, and springs. I'll check the cast # and reply in a little while
