Thanks I did not think 400 SB was available till later. Do you know if 396/402 BB was offered in a SS ?rianbechtold said:I'm pretty sure it was the 402. I may be dumb here, but i've never seen a chevelle (atleast not a 70+) with a 400 sb. Mine is an original Malibu 400 and it came with a 402.
I had a 70 SS 396 it said SS 396 on fender but I think 71 just said ss unless it was a 454 w/cowl hood. I just picked up a 71 SS and been sorting it out and collecting ideas. Needs some rust repair in rear wheel wells but other than that pretty solid car. It has a 396 / 400 / 12 bolt for drive line.. Great site glad I found it.rianbechtold said:YES I DO!!! BOY, I are smart today! LOL. The 402 was available through 70-72 and replaced the 396.
Do you know if one of those were a 2 bbl carb on an SS ... Seems silly to me but saw one that said that on radiator hold down plateblackrose90 said:In 1971 the SS was available with two 350's,400 and 454.
actually, 400 wasn't an engine available. It was two 350's, a 402, and a 454. Just to be correctblackrose90 said:In 1971 the SS was available with two 350's,400 and 454.
On the SS or Just the Burianbechtold said:yea, u could get a 2 barrel 350 in 71
No have lots of info that tells me the guy was on the level . Old pic's of the car with original paint .. White with SS stripes. Car was stored after the owner was crippled since 1986. Can see the old stripes bleading through the black paint .. wrincled where original stripes were. Mainly asking to learn. The one I saw at a local show had a 502 in it and it had 350 2bbl on the radiator support sticker. Thought it was a silly option .. but is was 71 .. the begining of the endrianbechtold said:The lower horsepower had the 2bbl and it was on an ss. The sb 400 was not offered on a 71 chevelle. Other years, i dont know. The 400 was a 402 cubic inch engine. Same as the 396 though (not sure whether they stroked or bored it). And what are you asking for? Are you trying to identify whether it's a reall ss? BTW, that is a NICE 71!!!!
Dont know ... I was told this was the original hood .. The mirrors are cheep plastic aftermarket ones that the guy put on it ... Back when chevelles were not worth anythingRedmanf1 said:I thought the 71 SS had hood pins in the cowl hood and remote mirror. I thought 70 was the only year for non functional cowl hood without pins? I have both but I used the one without pins. I like the look
They bored it .030, but kept the same stroke.rianbechtold said:The 400 was a 402 cubic inch engine. Same as the 396 though (not sure whether they stroked or bored it)
The so called "396" WAS the 402 starting in late 69, it just wasn't advertised as a 402.rianbechtold said:YES I DO!!! BOY, I are smart today! LOL. The 402 was available through 70-72 and replaced the 396.
