Okay guys just got this 64 chevelle yesterday. Below is what I have on paper about the motor. Any input, advice and estimates on power is welcome.

4.165 bore, cast iron 350 crankshaft, .010 .010 w/comp spacers, Keith black hyperutectic pistons w/16th 16th 3/16 speed pro rings and floating pins, eagle 6" sir rods, AFR aluminum 210 heads, Chet Herbert RR253 roller cam (289 300 adv, 253 [email protected] .605 lift w 1.5 rockers, 106cl [email protected], comp cams pro mag roller rockers 1.6 intake .645 lift, 1.5 exhaust, lunati lifters w/Howard's rev kit-street use, Herbert stud girdle kit, spectre sheet metal valve covers, edelbrock street tunnel ram manifold w/ 2 Holly 600 carbs .
10:9 to 1 compression

I don't know if it all makes sense or not. I'm nowhere close to an expert. Trying to learn as I go.

Looking forward to everyone's input!

I kinda wish the crank was forged.

The specs make sense. What fuel are you running at almost 11:1? The tunnel ram and duals will take away a lot of the fun factor as far as cruising the streets. This setup is about 90 percent on the RACE side of the performance spectrum. HP should be around 550, but by looking at your combo, most of that will be made up top.

Thanks Doug. It was a little rough driving it home 130 miles lol. It's on 91 octane . From what I've been told with the aluminum heads and that compression I'm at the very limits of pump gas. Is most of the power being top end a bad thing?

Power up high is great if you mainly use the car to race. For a car that sees regular street-duty this not a good setup.

Would a "normal" manifold and one carb take away a lot of power?
If you go to a dual-plane intake and single carb you will enjoy your car a lot more on the street. You may sacrifice nominal HP #'s up high, but the low end HP and torque #'s will increase, and if you want this for a street car then this will make your combo much more user-friendly.

$800 will get you an Air Gap manifold and carb with a little left over. I am partial to Q-jets, especially with a setup like yours. Call http://cliffshighperformance.com
and give him all your engine and cam specs and he will build you a carb that will make you and your engine very happy!

What is your tunnel ram/carb setup?

Curious..do like tunnel rams

If you got a short stroke setup that wants to wind up why cork it with a dual plane

Using a single on the street and runs just fine not cammed to be loafing around under 2k anyways. The DP will give a little more snap down low but youll lose some of that top end pull thats so much fun.

I would love to know how many of you tunnel-ram bashers have ever ran the edelbrock street tunnel-ram ..
When i tested back to back the performer rpm and the strip dominator on a 350" with comp 270H the test was a wash..i could not feel any difference anywhere..shift point 6900 rpm.

But wait...when i installed my very tall TR1YX and 2 600 cfm carbs the MPG was the same but i picked up throttle response and more power everywhere...

I love the tall tunnel-rams ..i think you have a good combo..of course holley 600's are not my choice...I like the carter afb's...Or if you can find them some 660's
510-530 is my guess on power.
Sounds like a great combo to me...

Doug you rock. It has a 10" 3200 converter
That should work with your setup since that's what you already have, but If you decide to buy another one I'd recommend a 3500-3700 built towards the tight side.

Just going off of his first post saying that it was a PITA to drive it home, his current combo doesn't sound like what he's looking for as far as street manners. It would seem to me that his current combo wouldn't even make any real power until around 3500 RPM which puts it way down on the street-friendly list.

Your car runs 7.48 in the 1/8th @ barona , in the typical 3000-4000 DA ... the car cruises VERY nice for the setup ! The carbs are actually the expensive HP series ! And the intake is polished !

If you want go with a single plane and single carb , get a super victor ,or keith dorton strip dominator ( i prefer the dorton ) . for the carb i would prefer a holley 830 annular . Your engine is NOT designed for a dual plane intake !!! ( will it work ,YES )

For example , we just built a similar 377 , same 10.9 compression , AFR 227 HEADS , hurricane intake , harcore hp 950 carb , 1 5/8 headers , and BIG solid roller 263-271 , with .707 -.656 lift on a 106 lsa ... car has th400 ,and 4500 converter ...IT CHASSIS DYNOED 487 RWHP @ 7100 AND STAYED UNTIL 7300 RPM ....... car runs 7.04 @ 100 mph at barona , car is likely 3250lbs .

BTW , IT IS A SMALL WORLD , THE GUY you bought the car from is my friend .You bought a REALLY nice car ! congrats .

This guy knows your setup. He should be able to hook you up with the best combo for a street car.

Jason, that's crazy! Small world! Even smaller...I tried to trade John for his blue nova before I sold my 68 chevelle. We laughed about that yesterday when we figured it out.

I love this car so far, just gotta seal up a few small leaks. I was smiling all 130 miles home. I don't think I'll change anything on the motor for a while if ever. Did you build this motor or just familiar with the setup??

No i didnt build it . I just know the capabilities of the car . Thats a healthy small block , the only thing i would change would be the keith black pistons ....But as long as the tune is good , and you use plenty of octane when racing they will be fine . I would recommend buying an AIR FUEL RATIO gauge so you can get every last bit of power out of that tunnel ram setup . After installing a AIR/FUEL METER , you will have one on every car you ever own again !! It is the coolest tool to have ,and will also teach you alot ! You should take it to a track with lower elevation , and hang on ! it should go 7.30 in the lower altitude .
