getting ready to put the 396 (402) back in my '71 and wonder what everyone here prefers to use, a 1 piece or 4 piece gasket on the oil pan??? I refuse to use cork, looking at FelPro #1884R ( 1-piece rubber, steel core) and the Felpro #1893 (4 piece rubber). will be using a stock 4qt oil pan. thanks!!!

I wouldn't worry about which gasket you want to use. I would worry more about the rear main seal. Make sure you get a good one and install it correctly.

I do like the one piece pan gaskets though but that's my opinion. The main reason I like them is they have steel inserts in the bolt holes so its hard to over tighten them and crush the gasket.

I prefer the soft one piece with steel rings around the bolt holes. You'll need longer bolts.

I would use the steel core rubber one piece with a new pan that had flat pan rails.
